26 km (16 miles) northeast of Vicenza, 93 km (58 miles) northwest of Venice.
From the 14th-century Castello Inferiore, where the town council still meets, an ancient stone wall snakes up the hill to enclose the Castello Superiore, which has commanding views. Marostica's most celebrated feature is the checkerboard-like square made with colored stone, Piazza Castello. The big annual event here, held in September in even-number years, is the Partita a Scacchi, a human-scale chess game.
