Within the extensive grounds there are places to gather—poolside bars, three restaurants including the covered alfresco Il Corbezzolo, where the abundant breakfast is taken, as well as secluded spots for quiet sunbathing and contemplation.      

For the cognoscenti, famous or otherwise, this is the place to stay in Anacapri, thanks to its spa, designer boutique, exceptional restaurants, suites with private pools, and rooms with art or film themes (ask for the Monroe, Callas, or Warhol). The Capri Beauty Farm operates from here. If you can tear yourself away from the hotel, you can avail of one of their private boats. Now part of the Oetker Collection, Capri's oldest hotel (1822) is fresh off a top-to-bottom renovation by lauded architect Francis Sultana in 2024, and it's now the hottest and most expensive hotel on the island. It began life as the Locando Pagano (once hosting August Kopisch, who "discovered" the Grotta Azzurra), and although it's just down the street from La Piazzetta, it offers respite from the street-level bustle. A onetime private home, this chic yet friendly small hotel has become a Capri favorite of those seeking intimate luxury, where most of the bright, airy rooms have panoramic terraces—shaded in bougainvillea and with views of the gardens and the sea in the background. Many guests, however, prefer to congregate in the magical garden, where lunch and afternoon granitas are served beside the glorious swimming pool. Wake up to excellent breakfast on the magnificent rooftop terrace served by long-time head waiter Kamal.

This oasis has stunning views of the Marina Corricella, with its terrace overlooking the pretty fishing village. The staff is ready to pamper you (and nonguests) with every kind of beauty treatment imaginable, and you can top it all off in the open-air roof pool, surrounded by Ischia's rich vegetation.

This hotel, with its pleasing facade and whitewashed arches, lies in a traffic-free zone near the heart of Anacapri; front rooms have large terraces facing Monte Solaro, while those at the back are quieter and more private.

Dominating the entrance to the Riva Destra, Ischia's restaurant strip overlooking the port, this is the closest decent hotel to the arriving hydrofoils. The 1970s facade may put you off, and the rooms are nothing special, but the roof garden with its heated swimming pool is where most guests spend their time.

Surrounded by luxuriant gardens, in a large cream-color villa, the San Michele offers solid comfort and good value, along with spectacular views from sky-high Anacapri. The showstopper here is the vast pool—the largest on Capri—surrounded with tables for fine dining and lounging. Interiors are modern, with some Neapolitan period pieces adding atmosphere; most rooms have a terrace or balcony overlooking either sea or island. One of Anacapri's best nightclubs, La Lanterna Verde, is also here.

The spot where Jacqueline Kennedy famously sought refuge from the paparazzi is still a wonderful place to experience a quintessentially Caprese atmosphere, particularly in the public spaces, featuring a blue-on-white bar/breakfast area, 1950s majolica-lined stairs, and antique-y accents. With greater crowds packing Capri, the hotel does suffer a bit from its location—just around the corner from the Piazzetta and right in the thick of crowds, cafés, and discos. If you're bronzed, beautiful, or both, this is your kind of hotel—a white Moorish mansion that evokes Hollywood-style Capri, complete with hillside terraces (indeed, the name means "little stairway"), winding paths, bougainvillea arbors, and an Architectural Digest opulence. Above the sea about a mile from Forio town—between the Bay of San Francesco and the crystal-clear waters of Chiaia—Hotel La Scogliera has simply furnished rooms done up in Mediterranean hues and bright tile flooring. Its family run atmosphere and hospitality make guests feel at right at home, if your home is on a beach. In the summer they build a platform by the sea, ideal for sun worshippers.

The closest hotel to Vivara, this inviting hotel in a former warehouse maintains the characteristics of its marine history while flaunting modern decor. Guest rooms are bright and airy, and all but two (on the ground floor) have a view of the beach. The hotel has a small but immaculate garden, and the marina, beach, and Vivara island are just steps away.

Up a tiny side street above the Certosa, this simple, quiet hotel offers unassuming vibes, terrace views, and reasonable rates. As a bonus, the ebullient owner Ettore, who spends the winter in Connecticut, is generous with island advice and restaurant recommendations. 

Far from the madding, sunburned crowds—in a sleekly renovated former fortress on Punta Cornacchia above the Bay of San Montano—this luxurious getaway (part of the chic Pellicano Hotels Group) tempts its privileged guests to stay put and relax, with a glamorous heated pool overlooking a storybook cove, fine restaurants, spa treatments, and hundreds of pretty pine and pomegranate trees. Inside, everything is white-on-white, accented with charming retro details, like brass lamps and illustrated matchbooks. Most guest rooms are in the 16th-century Aragonese tower. The restaurants—La Torre and the more laidback, alfresco La Baia—are open to nonguests by reservation.

Some say Capri has three villages: Capri Town, Anacapri, and this landmark hotel, which looms large in island mythology, attracts utterly devoted guests, and has an enormous lobby and theater-cum-convention center that are 1930s jewels designed by noted modernist Gio Ponti. The "Quisi" also scores points for its restaurants, see-and-be-seen bars (plug into Capri's network of rich and famous at the Quisi Bar), and convenient location a short walk from the Piazzetta. The clientele is so loyal that even though this is Capri's biggest hotel, it's really hard to get a reservation in high season.

Built in the early 1960s, and home to Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton while they filmed Cleopatra, Ischia's largest luxury hotel is tucked away in an exclusive corner of the beach, where it pampers guests (some attending conventions) with its resort facilities and spa treatments. Rooms are ample and decorated in warm Mediterranean colors, and most have terraces or balconies, some with Jacuzzis, many overlooking the sea, others the hotel gardens. Don't miss the fun of socializing with chic vacationers in the elegant bar or at the Michelin-starred restaurant, Indaco—a meal here is worth it if only for the fabulous views over the harbor.

At this quiet family-run hotel—a short walk from Citara Beach and the crowded Giardini Poseidon spa—each of the tastefully decorated rooms has its own theme; the best and most expensive rooms take advantage of the hotel's panoramic views from the upper-terrace wing. Breakfast is served on a terrace with a view of the sea, and, in the hanging gardens there are four swimming pools, including an infinity pool and one filled by geothermal aquifers 30 feet deep.

With a superlative panoramic view over the Bay of Cartaromana, Villa Antonio offers a quiet haven close to the action, and direct access to the sea is a few private steps away from the casual whitewashed villa. Sun beds, though, abound at several garden levels, so most guests tend not to stray too far. Guest rooms are basic, but all have air-conditioning and sea views. The owner's brother is a sculptor—his granite and marble works are scattered around the flower-decked terraces, and his studio is in the square by the hotel.

Popular with young Wandervögel (young German travelers) who have a laid-back approach to traveling, this unique option is noted for its artisanal style and picturesque architecture: most guest rooms are in tiny garden villas and often feature rotunda ceilings, toy fireplaces, and Caprese arts and crafts. One shortcoming is the location, at the far back end of Anacapri. Although you are only a few minutes' walk from the Villa Damecuta ruins, you're very far away from the island's action.

Housed in an early 20th-century villa, this boutique hotel above Marina Grande amid lush terraced gardens evokes a time when the island was an artists' paradise; most of the sumptuous, modern guest rooms look out over the bay, and each one is individually decorated and named for a Capri luminary. If the sleek hotel's small pool isn't to your liking, choose a suite with a private pool. A shuttle bus meets you at the port, then a welcome drink is served under a shady veranda overlooking the bay, while your luggage is whisked to your room. The Stai Spa offers exclusively designed treatments, while the Ziqù restaurant serves traditional local fare with an original touch.

This yellow, two-story, Mediterranean-style hostelry built in 1974—complete with Capri's signature round windows and a setting amid lovely gardens in a tranquil residential district—has lots of Caprese family spirit and simple but homey, brightly accented rooms that will make you feel like a guest in a private villa. The restful nights do come at a price: it's a 15-minute walk down to the action of the piazzetta.
