La Palma

Via V. Emanuele 39, Capri, Campania, 80073, Italy

Fodor’s Expert Review

Although it's the oldest on Capri (1822), this attentively run hotel has not rested on its laurels—at the front door you're immediately given a blast of island glamour, with the gleaming lobby, and majolica-tile rooms providing a delightful contrast to the hustle at street level outside (this is just down the street from La Piazzetta). Through the lobby, make for the hotel's magical courtyard, lined with coves and columns sculpted in archetypal Caprese "zabaglione" stucco. Beginning life as the Locando Pagano, this hostelry first hosted August Kopisch, who then went on to "discover" the Grotta Azzurra. What he would think of the highly lush guest rooms, now dripping with "frescoes" and dolce vita accents, remains to be seen. The outdoor restaurant Relais is on the much-frequented Via Vittorio Emanuele—the place to see and be seen.
