This Anacapri icon with unique design, spa, exquisite food, and luxurious retreat atmosphere throughout has amassed a noted art collection and even launched a fashion and home line and hosted A-list cultural events. Accommodations are individually designed; some pay tribute to fashion inspirations, from Monroe and Callas, others honor famous artists, and still others may have private pools or gardens. The on-site Capri Medical Spa offers both one-off treatments and multiday programs targeting wellness, diet, posture, leg health, and more. Along with a hopping bar and a casual bistro, the dining options include the two-Michelin-star L'Olivo, the rooftop Japanese restaurant Zuma, and Il Riccio Restaurant & Beach Club overlooking the sea.

Offering guests comfort, style, luxury, and sigh-inducing views since the 19th century, this hotel is a short walk from the piazzetta—near the action, but not quite in the thick of it. All 23 suites have private terraces, but the clincher is the 1950s Hollywood–inspired Bellevue Suite, with its 360-degree-view rooftop terrace and plunge pool. Three salt-filled golden bowls in the lobby extend a traditional island welcome, and elsewhere Regency-style decor combines local color with international chic. For the cognoscenti, famous or otherwise, this is the place to stay in Anacapri, thanks to its spa, designer boutique, exceptional restaurants, suites with private pools, and rooms with art or film themes (ask for the Monroe, Callas, or Warhol). Michelin-starred chef Gennaro Esposito has taken the helm of the dining outlets, which include the signature ground-floor restaurant Gennaro's, the rooftop restaurant Bianca, and the beach club Da Gioia by La Palma in Marina Piccola. 

A onetime private home, this chic yet friendly small hotel has become a Capri favorite of those seeking intimate luxury, where most of the bright, airy rooms have panoramic terraces—shaded in bougainvillea and with views of the gardens and the sea in the background. Many guests, however, prefer to congregate in the magical garden, where lunch and afternoon granitas are served beside the glorious swimming pool. Wake up to excellent breakfast on the magnificent rooftop terrace served by long-time head waiter Kamal.

Designed by Le Corbusier, this former private villa became a satellite headquarters for America's central command during World War II and hosted Churchill and Eisenhower; today, it's one of Capri's most beautiful hotels, with a breathtaking location on Punta Tragara; public areas adorned with baronial fireplaces, gilded antiques, and travertine marble; and guest rooms that are simultaneously sumptuous and cozy-casual. The dreamy garden is a showstopper, with two pools (one jet-powered) beside the idyllic arbor-covered restaurant, Monzù.

This hotel, with its pleasing facade and whitewashed arches, lies in a traffic-free zone near the heart of Anacapri; front rooms have large terraces facing Monte Solaro, while those at the back are quieter and more private.

Surrounded by luxuriant gardens, in a large cream-color villa, the San Michele offers solid comfort and good value, along with spectacular views from sky-high Anacapri. The showstopper here is the vast pool—the largest on Capri—surrounded with tables for fine dining and lounging. Interiors are modern, with some Neapolitan period pieces adding atmosphere; most rooms have a terrace or balcony overlooking either sea or island. One of Anacapri's best nightclubs, La Lanterna Verde, is also here.

The spot where Jacqueline Kennedy famously sought refuge from the paparazzi is still a wonderful place to experience a quintessentially Caprese atmosphere, particularly in the public spaces, featuring a blue-on-white bar/breakfast area, 1950s majolica-lined stairs, and antique-y accents. With greater crowds packing Capri, the hotel does suffer a bit from its location—just around the corner from the Piazzetta and right in the thick of crowds, cafés, and discos. That noted, it has grown a little ritzier over the years, and facilities now include a spa open to nonresidents. 

If you're bronzed, beautiful, or both, this is your kind of hotel—a white Moorish mansion that evokes Hollywood-style Capri, complete with hillside terraces (indeed, the name means "little stairway"), winding paths, bougainvillea arbors, and an Architectural Digest opulence. The interior features Venetian blackamoor statues, Empire-era consoles, and Valentino fabrics; guest rooms have overstuffed sofas, bright colors, large terraces, and his-and-her bathrooms (most with whirlpool baths). Up a tiny side street above the Certosa, this simple, quiet hotel offers unassuming vibes, terrace views, and reasonable rates. As a bonus, the ebullient owner Ettore, who spends the winter in Connecticut, is generous with island advice and restaurant recommendations. 

Some say Capri has three villages: Capri Town, Anacapri, and this landmark hotel, which looms large in island mythology, attracts utterly devoted guests, and has an enormous lobby and theater-cum-convention center that are 1930s jewels designed by noted modernist Gio Ponti. The "Quisi" also scores points for its restaurants, see-and-be-seen bars (plug into Capri's network of rich and famous at the Quisi Bar), and convenient location a short walk from the Piazzetta. The clientele is so loyal that even though this is Capri's biggest hotel, it's really hard to get a reservation in high season.

Popular with young Wandervögel (young German travelers) who have a laid-back approach to traveling, this unique option is noted for its artisanal style and picturesque architecture: most guest rooms are in tiny garden villas and often feature rotunda ceilings, toy fireplaces, and Caprese arts and crafts. One shortcoming is the location, at the far back end of Anacapri. Although you are only a few minutes' walk from the Villa Damecuta ruins, you're very far away from the island's action.

Housed in an early 20th-century villa, this boutique hotel above Marina Grande amid lush terraced gardens evokes a time when the island was an artists' paradise; most of the sumptuous, modern guest rooms look out over the bay, and each one is individually decorated and named for a Capri luminary. If the sleek hotel's small pool isn't to your liking, choose a suite with a private pool. A shuttle bus meets you at the port, then a welcome drink is served under a shady veranda overlooking the bay, while your luggage is whisked to your room. The Stai Spa offers exclusively designed treatments, while the Ziqù restaurant serves traditional local fare with an original touch.

This yellow, two-story, Mediterranean-style hostelry built in 1974—complete with Capri's signature round windows and a setting amid lovely gardens in a tranquil residential district—has lots of Caprese family spirit and simple but homey, brightly accented rooms that will make you feel like a guest in a private villa. The restful nights do come at a price: it's a 15-minute walk down to the action of the piazzetta.
