Packing

Travel light. That's the best packing advice you'll get for Greece. For starters, you won't need much, since dress is informal, especially in summer, and even for dinner in a good restaurant nice casual attire is fine. Men can easily get by without a sports jacket, and putting one on in the summer heat will almost be unthinkable. Also, if you'll be moving around by boat, you won't want to be hindered by more than one easy-to-handle rollerbag as you climb up and down gangplanks and stairs and maneuver ports. (Even if you plan to fly to islands, remember that planes are usually small and you'll be charged for anything more than small cabin luggage.) Town centers are ofen closed to cars, so you may well be walking to your accommodation and pulling your bag along narrow cobbled lanes and up steps. Pack clothing that lends itself to hand washing and easy drip dry, as laundromats are expensive and scarce outside of Athens and big towns, and hotels usually charge exorbinant fees for laundry. Bring shorts, for comfort (they're everyday wear on the islands) and for women, a skirt or pants, and for men, one pair of light troursers, for cool nights, nicer restaurants, and occasions such as monastery visits; for women, a light pashmina or other cover up for sun protection and to wear as a wrap; comfortable walking shoes; and a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen (though these are widely available in Greece).
