Capsis Bristol Boutique Hotel

$$ | Oplopiou 2, Thessaloniki, 54625, Greece Fodor's Choice

An elegant retreat with a touch of history, this exquisite boutique hotel occupies one of the few buildings that survived the great fire of 1917 untouched—during Ottoman rule the structure served as the city's post office—and, today, a mixture of handmade furniture, hand-picked antiques, and works of art makes this place special. Their spacious rooms are named after important Macedonian personalities such as Alexander the Great, Perseus, and Aristotle. The Bristol straddles the Ladadika and Kentro neighborhoods, near the waterfront, right in the thick of things, so it's ideally located for exploring the city.  The trendy Loupino, sharing the ground floor with the Bristol, is one of the more decent restaurants in the area.

Pros

  • Small intimate hotel
  • Ideal location
  • Large rooms

Cons

  • No parking

Bahar Boutique Hotel

$$ | Edessis 10 and Katouni, Thessaloniki, 54625, Greece

Also known as the "blue mansion," this lovingly restored 20th-century listed building has become the chic location to stay in this area. The blue theme continues inside, as a deep Wedgewood highlights the marble staircase leading up to the rooms. The period contextual rooms all have their own flavor, with soft blues, salmon, and reds.

Pros

  • Centrally located
  • Early check-in, late check-out available (usually for free)
  • Excellent breakfast

Cons

  • No free hotel parking
  • One or two rooms are smallish
  • Noisy area, but if you keep the double glazing widows shut it's not a problem
