Art Gallery Pension
A handsome house on a pretty residential street, this pension is comfortably old-fashioned, with family paintings on the muted white walls, comfortable beds, hardwood floors, ceiling fans, and balconies in many guest rooms. Though the residential neighborhood (a 10-minute walk south of the Acropolis) lacks the charm of Plaka, it has many fewer tourists, and the metro offers easy access to many of the city's sights. A congenial crowd of visiting students and single travelers fills the place. In winter, lower rates are available to long-term guests, some of whom stay on for a few months. Rates with and without the hearty buffet breakfast, which is served on the fourth-floor terrace with a view of Athens's sacred ancient rocks, are available.
