Pi Athens
Why it made the list
A petit boutique hotel (6 suites and apartments of varying sizes) in the residential area of Pangrati, set behind the white marble Panathenaic stadium, which was built for the first Olympic games of the modern era. Urban chic, finished in plenty of shades of grey (and some wood), with distant views of the Acropolis from the higher suites and the roof terrace. Hitting the town center proper means walking through the National Garden (a lovely walk, to be fair), or taking a short (and cheap, at 3.60 euros) taxi ride, however exploring this quarter has its rewards too, as you’ll come across some really excellent and popular bars and tavernas.
Fresh Hotel
Why it made the list
Tucked away on a rather besmirched side street in the yet to be gentrified inner city of Athens, the vibrant greens, blues and orange colors that clad the hotel really do give it a fresh appearance in the context of its setting. The central location is a stone’s throw from many of the capital's coolest bars and restaurants, whilst the narrow streets and alleys leading to and from the property are covered in some fine (and not so fine, in some instances) graffiti and wall murals.
Coco-mat Hotel Athens
Why it made the list
Better known for making exquisite, top of the range eco-mattresses, Coco-mat has recently turned its attention to creating boutique lodgings around these mattresses. This ecologically-minded Greek brand comfortably incorporates a modish urban/industrial chic hotel above their flagship store which now also doubles as the reception. All this in the highly desirable Kolonaki district, in the heart of Athens, home to some of the best museums and galleries in town. By the by, guests can explore the capital on their very cool wooden bicycles (for no extra charge).
Periscope
Why it made the list
Poised on the south-facing slope of Lycabettus Hill in upmarket Kolonaki (great for shopping, bars, cafés and museums), in central Athens, Periscope playfully engages with the concept of viewing the world around you from above and below, as belies the name. The latest round of renovations, in 2017, further enhanced the underwater sensation, whilst the 22 spacious rooms kept their minimalist design and the quirky topographic photos of Athens on some walls and ceilings.
The New Hotel
Why it made the list
All the rooms (79 in total) and hotel’s communal spaces were designed by the visionary Brazilian design team of Fernando and Humberto Campana. A big part of their POV in this project was to use recycled materials and get local art and design students to imagine and construct many of the hotels distinctive features and furniture, thus giving the feel of staying in an art installation. The central location and state of the art business facilities also make it a good stay for the new breed of business traveler.
In[n]Athens
Why it made the list
Step out of the bustling streets into the cool atrium, the haven-like centerpiece of this boutique hotel property in the heart of Athens. Just off Syntagma square and the Greek Parliament, most of Athens’ incomparable sights are a lively and intriguing urban hike away. In this small (22 rooms) and unique (for Athens) hotel, the modern, fresh design is eye-catching, fun, yet ergonomic.
O&B
Why it made the list
Very cool spot in a grungy but hip corner of central Athens (Psirri), within walking distance to all the major sites of what was once a center of enlightenment and the capital of the ancient world. Many of the 22 rooms and suites, in this anything but grungy boutique hotel, have spectacular views of the Acropolis and Thissio area. Staff are wonderful and the hotel boasts its very own little gourmet restaurant (innovative Greek). Plenty of nightlife nearby too.
