The Best Bargain Hotels in Athens

Natasha Giannousi-Varney | January 15, 2018

Athens, having been through a crippling nearly decade long recession, has some very good deals for those visiting on a budget. There are a few small hotels springing up, as well as some older ones that fit the bill. The locations to go for are around the Acropolis like Plaka and Monastiraki, as well as the more residential areas like Koukaki and Thissio, where you can walk to most of the major attractions in the city and many of the great restaurants and bars on offer in the Greek capital.

Hotel Achilleas

Why it made the list

Less than a quarter mile from Athens’ central square, Syntagma, even though it’s not the prettiest, Achilleas functions very well as a short stay option in the capital. Next to the busy shopping district, there are plenty of eateries and bars on its doorstep. Plaka is a 5-minute walk away and the closest entrance to the Acropolis about 15 minutes on foot. The staff are warm and helpful in this family-run establishment.

Acropolis Museum Boutique Hotel

Why it made the list

Located in the off the residential Makriyianni district, only a couple of minutes’ walk from Acropolis Metro and museum, and Plaka (5-minute walk), this is a convenient hotel for short stays in Athens. The rooms are on the large side, staff are on point and breakfast is reasonable. Excellent drinking and dining options nearby, but a negative is that it is right on one of Athens’ busiest roads, Syngrou Ave.

Athens Center Square

Why it made the list

Very close to the central but a touch seedy Omonia Square (with a metro station), this bright and colorful hotel benefits from being close to many of the trendy nightlife spots of the capital. Some rooms have Acropolis views as does the lovely roof terrace bar. Service is good and breakfast more than adequate, this establishment punches above its weight.

Marble House

Why it made the list

Family run, small hotel (16 spacious rooms), with very friendly staff, makes you feel right at home. Centrally located in the residential Koukaki district (5-minute walk to Syngrou Fix metro), it is reasonably close to the Acropolis and its museum (both a leisurely 10-minute walk). On the downside it has few amenities (breakfast is charged extra)) and no elevator, but even so it is still excellent value for money.
