Fodor's Expert Review Ammersee Hotel
Summerstr. 32, Herrsching, Bavaria, 82211, Germany See on Map
This comfortable--and cool--modern resort hotel is located right on the Ammersee. It has views from an unrivaled position on the lakeside promenade, apparently the longest in Germany. Rooms overlooking the lake are of course more expensive and in demand, but worth splashing out on. Some have balconies. The restaurant and bar are both good, if a bit pricey, and there's a spa.
room
Rooms are perhaps not as stylised as the public areas of the hotel, but the views to the lake are great and the simple cream look, with splashes of color, is not unattractive.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Amenities are a little sparse, too - for example, there are no tea or coffee facilities.
bathroom
Bathrooms are a bit old-fashioned, but clean.
lobby
The hotel lobby is sleek and cool, all concrete, wood and copper lamps.
pool
There's no pool, but the hotel has a private bathing jetty for guests taking a dip in the Ammersee itself.
spa
The hotel's spa includes a Finnish sauna, a steam bath, wellness showers and a relaxation area. Its beauty spa has four treatment rooms that should be booked in advance, because it can be popular (hotel and external guests are both welcome).
dining
The funky Steg 32 restaurant and lounge has an international menu, including local fish. You can enjoy a spicy bouillabaisse or catfish from the Danube--while gazing out at the lake, of course. Breakfast is not bad, either.
drinking
The hotel's Tom Dixon wine lounge is a nice spot for a glass.
While the hotel really comes into its own in summer, with its gorgeous lakeside terrace, there are pluses in winter too: for example, the hotel's 'mulled wine hut'.
LOCATION
Getting Around
The hotel is all about the lake, and it could hardly be better placed for that. Otherwise, it's in Herrsching village, which is pretty easy to reach both by public transport and car from Munich. There's free parking.
Restaurants
Try seaside sushi&sake (9-minute walk) in the town. Or La Dolce Vita (4-minute walk) is a decent Italian restaurant nearby.
WHY WE LIKE IT
A relaxing and unusually hip lakeside escape from the city, or a jumping off point for travels around Bavaria, with a spa, cool restaurant, and a private bathing jetty for the summer. The rooms are perhaps not quite as cool as the rest of the hotel, but we'll forgive them because they clearly share our appreciation for their stellar lakeside location. Enjoy.
