Located right on the shore, this five-star hotel is the go-to option for lakeside luxury, thanks to its elegant rooms and suites, its array of spectacular dining options, and its unparalleled service. Even the entry-level Elegant Nature Rooms are wonderfully spacious, with their Alpine-inspired design (think natural woods, leather, and linen), balconies, and modern bathrooms with tubs and rain showers. THE BEST HOTEL IN GERMANY

Landgasthof Hotel Gentner

$$ | Bregenzer Str. 31, Nürnberg, 90475, Germany
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

For a quiet, peaceful, and luxurious stay within easy reach of city attractions, this charming suburban hotel—with its spacious bedrooms, modern fitness and wellness area, and superb breakfast buffet—fits the bill. Without doubt, the main attraction here is the highly-regarded restaurant Johanns Wirtshaus, which serves modern interpretations of traditional Franconian recipes using the best local, sustainable produce. Try the sublime Schweineschäufele (crispy pig shoulder, served with potato dumplings and sauerkraut, and slathered in a rich gravy), then wash it down with a frothy Rotbier (red beer). Despite its out-of-town location on the edge of a forest, Landgasthof Hotel Gentner is just off the A6 highway, a 20-minute drive from Nuremberg city centeror, for avid walkers, a 40-minute stroll from Langwasser Süd U-Bahn station.

Pros

  • Home to one of Germany's best restaurants

  • Peaceful forest walks start down the street

Cons

  • You'll need a car to stay here (or a real love of walking)

THE BEST HOTEL IN GERMANY

Parkhotel Egerner Höfe

$$$$ | Aribostr. 19-26, Rottach-Egern, 83700, Germany
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

The spa is the star at this upmarket boutique hotel, with its wellness facilities including a 20-meter (66-foot) indoor-outdoor pool, a fitness room, several beauty and massage treatment rooms, and an elegant (and very extensive) sauna area. You can easily spend a full day shuttling between extremes of hot and cold—from Finnish sauna to plunge pool, salt sauna to ice room—and the time in between relaxing in the lovely, gender-segregated relaxation rooms. And yet wellness is only one of the many elements that makes this place special. The beautifully appointed rooms and suites, the fine-dining restaurant (with two Michelin stars), the handsome (and well-stocked) bar, the lovely manicured gardens, and the consistently exquisite interior design all combine to create one of the lake's most luxurious retreats. All stays at Egerner Höfe include a Tegernsee Card, which affords you free rides on local buses and boats (as well as big discounts on sights), so you can leave your car in the free, secure underground car park.

Pros

  • Spectacular spa includes a women-only sauna
  • Two-Michelin-starred Dichter gourmet restaurant
  • Tegernsee Card includes free transport and sight discounts

Cons

  • A five-minute walk from the lakefront
  • Shower controls are a little complicated
  • Included breakfast buffet is good but not exceptional

Ameron Neueschwanstein Alpsee Resort & Spa

$$$ | Alpseestrasse 21, Hohenschwangau, 87645, Germany

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

The former Schlosshotel Lisl und Jägerhouse Hotel has been renamed and expanded, with a new full-service spa and is now operated by a European-based luxury hotel chain. Rooms in the historic and intimate Jägerhouse have antique furnishings, some with swan-motif bathroom fixtures, while decor elsewhere is contemporary and sleek to avoid competing with the spectacular view of the fairytale Neuschwanstein castle. Rooms with a view can be requested on booking.  Walk along Neueschwansteinstr. from the hotel to the castle, approximately one mile, or ask the concierge to order you a taxi. There are three restaurants and a lobby bar. The more casual Bräuerstüberl serves traditional schnitzels and wursts and local Konig Ludwig beer on draft.

Pros

  • Amazing castle views
  • Excellent on-site restaurants
  • Full-service spa

Cons

  • Expensive in-season
  • One-mile walk to castle (or taxi)
  • Isolated from shopping and other activities in town

Hotel Maximillian's

$$$ | Maximilianstr. 40, Augsburg, 86150, Germany

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Formerly the Steigenberger Drei Mohren, this continues to be a five-star hotel where kings, princes, Napoléon, and the Duke of Wellington have enjoyed more than 300 years of attentive service. Rooms have been modernized and a spa area added without detracting from the 500-year-old building's traditional luxury. Though some rooms are on the small side, modern furnishings make this a top-notch choice for both business and leisure travelers. Dining options include the gourmet restaurant Sartory, with one Michelin star, and the bistro Maximilian's, with an open kitchen and a popular Sunday brunch. There's also a lobby bar, 3M.

Pros

  • Spacious lobby with inviting bar

History meets contemporary style in the heart of Berlin, in a building that once housed the Royal Danish Embassy and still retains governmental grandeur—from the classical facade to the dramatic entry staircase—now mixed with warming touches like cozy nooks designed by Patricia Uriquola. Public spaces showcase the leafy neighborhood through walls of windows and the photography of noted shutterbugs like Helmut Newton, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Diane Arbus. The 80 rooms are spread out over the historic or new wings, and feature views of the courtyard, nearby park, or the zoo. Some have balconies or terraces, or perks like curved bathtubs, but all feature a decor of streamlined furnishings, high ceilings, dark wood floors, and amenities like free Wi-Fi, premium TV channels, and HD Apple entertainment systems. Michelin-starred Catalonian chef Paco Perez oversees two on-site eateries—one casual, one fine dining—that draw upon the Mediterranean flavors of his homeland, while the zoo-view bar-and-tapas lounge serves everything from cocktails of the 1920s and '30s to a list of 400 German and Spanish wines. A well-equipped gym, swimming pool, Finnish sauna, and holistic-minded spa help relax both the leisure and post-meeting crowds.

Pros

  • Central location
  • Popular restaurants and bar
  • Berlin Zoo views

Situated on 13 hectares (32 acres) of land just over halfway between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Mittenwald, this spectacular mountain retreat was commissioned in 1913 by the English aristocrat Mary Portman. Today, the original house retains the feel of a historic English country manor, while the modern Garden Wing perfectly complements the surrounding nature, creating plenty of room to spread out and relax in the midst of the Karwendel mountains. Three outdoor pools—a 21-meter-long swimming pool, a saltwater bath, and a heated Japanese onsen—along with indoor pools, an extensive spa and wellness area, a meditation house, and a gourmet restaurant all combine to create a luxury resort atmosphere. For a special treat, rent out the treehouse or gatehouse as a private hideaway. Fritz Lauterbad

$$$$ | Am Zollernblick 1, Freudenstadt, 72250, Germany Fodor's Choice

Guests can access hiking trails directly from the property or partake in fitness classes in the well-equipped gym.
