Fodor's Expert Review Sisak Fortress

Sisak Military Site

A bit to the south of the town center—3 km (2 miles) to be exact, where the rivers Kupa and Sava meet—stands the once-mighty Sisak Fortress (built 1544–50), with one prominent bastion at each point of its famously triangular form and a hugely significant past. It was here, on June 22, 1593, that the Habsburgs, in the company of Croats and Slovenes, pulled off a monumental victory over the fearsome Ottoman Turks, a triumph that figured prominently in halting the Turks' advance toward Zagreb and farther into Western Europe.
