THE BEST HOTEL IN CROATIA

Boutique Hotel Alhambra

$$$$ | Čikat 16, Mali Lošinj, 51550, Croatia
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

The clear, undulating waves of Čikat Bay is the backdrop of this gorgeous boutique hotel, which comes equipped with a Michelin-starred restaurant, a first-rate private beach, and rooms with luxurious marble bathrooms. The Austro-Hungarian terracotta façade is a visual treat, with immaculately landscaped gardens that frame the sea view from the rooms above. On that note, opt for a sea view room if possible: The sounds and the colors of the glistening, lapping waves permeating your space is well worth the experience (and the extra cost).

The onsite Michelin-starred Alfred Keller Restaurant—with an intimate outdoor patio that looks out onto the water—offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the last of which includes an experimental prix-fixe menu that rotates seasonally. The private beach is only steps away, with a beach bar that serves deceptively delicious fare—if available, ask for the octopus salad.

Pros

  • Situated right on picturesque Čikat Bay
  • Bicycles available for riding around the bay and the larger island coastline
  • A leisurely 20-minute walk away from the town of Mali Lošinj

Cons

  • Small spa and fitness facility
  • Slightly outdated carpeting in some rooms
  • No shops onsite

THE BEST HOTEL IN CROATIA

Villa Nai 3.3

$$$$ | Žman 199, Žman, 23282, Croatia
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Privacy and peace are abundant at this family-run island haven, featuring eight luxurious rooms and suites with outdoor terraces that overlook panoramic views of the surrounding olive groves or the Adriatic Sea. The water, as well as the nearest island of Krknata, are at least partially visible from five of its eight rooms, all of which come with floor-to-ceiling windows, spacious bathrooms with chic marble finishes, and deliciously comfortable king beds.

The onsite restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner that utilize local ingredients and produce grown on the property: The freshly-squeezed apple juice tastes like it’s straight from an apple orchard, the homegrown arugula is firm to the teeth, and the fish preserves the taste of the sea. The olive trees that populate the nearby hills are used to produce robust, award-winning olive oil onsite, which makes an excellent companion to your bread.

Excursions to the nearby Kornati islands—an absolute must while on Dugi Otok—can be seamlessly arranged, as well as a complimentary transfer to and from the nearby Zaglav Port (request in advance). The spa is petite, but the resident massage therapist packs a healthy punch, and the olive paste used in the treatments provides face-tingling pleasure.

Pros

  • Excellent fine-dining available onsite
  • Proximity to the Kornati Islands and Telašćica Nature Park
  • Congenial staff

Cons

  • Prices that match the luxury
  • Small spa and fitness facility
  • Limited shopping and amenities in the nearby villages

Bolara 60 Guesthouse

$ | Bolara 60, Croatia Fodor's Choice

In a tiny village just below Grožnjan, you'll find Bolara 60, a lovingly restored 18th-century stone farmhouse surrounded by peaceful rolling hills, vineyards, and olive groves. Anna and Matthew thoughtfully attend to every cozy detail with a high creative standard— from the vintage doorknobs to the wisteria-covered pergola, outdoor pizza oven, cozy open kitchen, antique beds with fine linens, bikes and boots to ramble with, and produce picked fresh from the garden. Anna's a chef, cooking teacher, food writer, and culinary anthropologist with many years working with Alice Waters to draw on, so anything she makes is amazing. But her breakfasts are truly fantastic, especially when eaten in the warmth of her open kitchen, with almost everything on the table made from ingredients grown right on the farm. And if they don't grow it, they know the best farmer, grower, or producer who does. This is a special culinary adventure not to be missed.

Pros

  • Welcoming attentive hosts
  • Incredible homemade food
  • Charming decor

Boutique Hotel Adriatic

$$ | Šetalište Kneza Domagoja 8, Orebic, 20250, Croatia Fodor's Choice

Locals are proud of their seafaring history in Orebić, but the Mikulić family has gone the extra mile and turned their boutique hotel—one of the most elegant, charming, and classy hotels on Pelješac—into an unofficial seafaring museum. Previously a 17th-century church and then a schoolhouse, the hotel has been tastefully decorated with relics from past ages, from ancient Greek and Roman vessels to antique binoculars. The rooms are beautifully restored, with original stone walls, soft neutral furnishings, and paintings of ships adorning the walls. The family can also organize tastings at their nearby winery.

Pros

  • Beautifully restored rooms with stone walls
  • Close to town center and beach
  • Excellent restaurant on-site

Nestled amid vineyards and olive groves, elegant serenity awaits guests at Boškinac. While all rooms are sunlit and well-appointed, the luxury rooms and suites offer amenities such as Jacuzzi tubs and room service on your private terrace. Lafodia Sea Resort

$$ | Obala Iva Kuljevana 35, Lopud, 20222, Croatia Fodor's Choice

This solid lodging option rises from a perfect pebble beach up a hillside overlooking the stunning bay of Lopud. Everything faces the sea, from the terraces of each room to the infinity pool to La Baja Restaurant (one of eight bars and restaurants on-site), where you can have a breezy lunch on the terrace. Elsewhere around the large but manageable property, the on-site Waterhill Wellness Spa is a sanctuary with its Turkish hammam and saunas, infinity Jacuzzi, and outdoor whirlpools. There are hiking trails that start right outside the hotel, and there's no better way to finish an afternoon than with a leisurely stroll along the promenade to the pastry shop to grab a gelato and watch the bright red sunset. Private transfers can be arranged directly from Dubrovnik Airport (€120 for up to four people).

Pros

  • Beach location with luxurious gazebos and beach beds
  • Excellent spa facilities
  • One of the best values in the region

Cons

  • Room decor feels a bit dated
  • Distance from the ferry
  • Day-trip boats from Dubrovnik dock just outside

A cluster of stone buildings seamlessly woven into the fabric of the Old Town, this 18th-century palace has been thoughtfully restored into six luxury residences, each its own unique creation that pays subtle homage to stops along Marco Polo's silk route. You'll feel immediately at home amid the soft rich furnishings of this 14-room guesthouse in Tvrđa, a one-of-a-kind accommodation and a great place to base yourself while in Osijek. A rambling old building full of arched doorways, long hallways, and exposed brick walls, the house was built in 1861 by an officer in the Austrian army. Each piece of art or sculpture around the hotel is unique, and the super helpful owner, Jasmina, can tell you the story behind each of them. Outside there is a spacious garden courtyard complete with decorative shrubs, bikes to rent, and a small wine and craft-beer bar on-site. They can also organize excursions around Slavonia and Baranja.

  • Comfortable, spacious, and beautifully-furnished rooms
