Adlers

$$ | Bruneckerstasse 1, Innsbruck, A-6020, Austria Fodor's Choice

One of Innsbruck's newer hotels, Adlers eclipses all with its panoramic vistas, and every room in the striking, supermodern building has floor-to-ceiling windows. Its spacious rooms are from the seventh floor up, so every guest has a fine view. With cutting-edge design and high-end chic, it's a perfect alternative to the traditional Tyrolean stube look, but amid the glass and steel there's still plenty of wood trim and flooring. Ask for Room 910 and soak in the bathtub gazing out at the mountains; take Room 1112, where the Nordkette, Innsbruck's ski area, and the lofty village of Hungerburg fill the windows; or take any Panoramic Deluxe room or Panorama Suite for a 180-degree view. Trainspotters can look down and be happy, too, with marshalling yards spread out for their delight.

Pros

  • Best view in the city
  • Handy for train station
  • Spacious rooms

Cons

  • No on-site parking (€18-a-day parking nearby)
  • Windows don't open
  • A little way from the prettiest part of town

Hotel Maximilian

$$ | Marktgraben 7–9, Innsbruck, A-6020, Austria Fodor's Choice

The clean, modern lines within the vaulted interior of a historic building are immediately striking in this hotel, a couple of minutes from the center of the Old Town. Parts date back to the 16th century, but a bold face-lift means the whole building has air-conditioning, and soundproofed windows mean that even rooms facing the busy street are peaceful. Amenities abound, from large TV screens and luxurious mattresses to anti-allergen bedding and lavender spray for pillows. The room styles vary, and there are adjoining rooms that are perfect for families.

Pros

  • Great location
  • English-language TV channels
  • Striking modern luxury

Cons

  • Lack of Tyrolean character
  • No on-site parking
  • Some rooms on the small side

Gasthof Goldener Adler

$$ | Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse 6, Innsbruck, A-6020, Austria

Perfectly located in the heart of the Old Innsbruck's pedestrian area, this is said to be one of Europe's oldest hotels, and since 1390 it has welcomed nearly every king, emperor, duke, and poet who passed through Innsbruck. Today, it's part of the Best Western chain. Each of the stylish and comfortable rooms are slightly different, though all have been renovated to include air conditioning, Sky TV, power showers, and other mod cons. Ask for Room 411 for a view of the iconic Golden Roof, or Room 504 for a view of the clock tower from your own private terrace.

Pros

  • Perfect location
  • Atmosphere of living history
  • Exceptional breakfast buffet

Cons

  • Beware the small steps in room doorways
  • No on-site parking
  • Portrait-heavy trad decor is not for everyone

Recommended Fodor's Video

Hotel Innsbruck

$$ | Innrain 3, Innsbruck, A-6020, Austria

With an ideal location in the heart of Innsbruck, there's an efficient and functional slant here rather than any wow factor, until you look out the window; many rooms have gorgeous views of the Old City, and those on the river side look toward the mountains. The indoor swimming pool in the sixth-floor spa area is a pleasant surprise, with an outdoor relaxation area and mountain view. All rooms are different, so be very specific about your needs. Some with wheelchair access are available.

Pros

  • Lovely sauna area (including indoor pool)
  • Great location
  • Family run

Cons

  • Often has large groups
  • Can be difficult to navigate
  • Business feel rather than Tyrolean charm

Hotel Klosterbräu

$$$$ | Klosterstrasse 30, Innsbruck, A-6100, Austria

Located in the heart of Seefeld, a charming ski town 17 km (10½ miles) northwest of Innsbruck, this 16th-century Augustinian monastery turned five-star spa hotel offers a luxury Alpine escape within easy reach of the city. Enter from the historic Dorfplatz (village square) and you'll get straight to the historic heart of the hotel, with a church abutting vaulted cloisters set around a large courtyard. Of course, a lot has changed in two centuries of ownership by the Seyrling family; the courtyard is now home to the hotel's main restaurant, serving one of the best breakfast buffets in Austria and a choice of delicious multicourse dinners, while the cloisters are the foundation for the luxurious rooms and suites, complete with wood-panelled decor, modern bathrooms and spacious balconies. Perhaps the highlight of the hotel is the vast wellness area, including large outdoor and indoor pools, seven themed saunas, and private spa treatment rooms. Adult guests will enjoy the historic wine cellar (look for the dusty bottles beneath the floor, buried to mark the birth of each Seyrling family member), while kids will love the nearby petting zoo (if the animals are absent, look in the nearby pastures).

Pros

  • Strong focus on sustainability
  • Free beer tap in sauna and free schnapps in elevator
  • Wonderful 3,500-square-meter wellness area

Cons

  • Closed in April and May
  • Childrens' play park in poor condition
  • Expensive (especially in winter)

Mondschein

$$ | Mariahilfstrasse 6, Innsbruck, A-6020, Austria

Among the city's oldest and pinkest houses, this warm and welcoming family-run hotel was built across the river from the Old Town in 1473. River-facing rooms are few and should be reserved in advance; the ones at the rear can be a little gloomy and some are on the small side, although bathrooms are often disproportionately spacious. All are nicely furnished, with bathrooms attractively finished in blue marble and Swarovski crystal decorations.

Pros

  • Some rooms have "starry night sky" ceilings
  • Has (expensive) on-site parking
  • Convenient riverfront location

Cons

  • Some rooms can be noisy
  • Courtyard rooms are dark
  • Some areas are looking tired

NALA individuellhotel

$$ | Müllerstrasse 15, A-6020, Austria

Quirky, colorful, and unapologetically contemporary, NALA is a breath of fresh air in a city dominated by heritage hotels. The individually-decorated bedrooms vary from muted, brown-and-white "zen" rooms to the brightly colored, two-level Pan Oh Rama suite with elevated bath and balcony views. Whatever room you choose, you can expect a queen or king-size bed, international cable TV, and a Nespresso machine. The hotel also has a basement fitness center and chillout space, as well as peaceful garden with a pond, plus a popular third-floor terrace complete with a food, beer, and "romantic essentials" vending machine; handy as most Innsbruck food stores close early. The breakfast buffet includes eggs, bacon, and sausages among the usual continental options, as well as sweet treats.

Pros

  • Quirky and colorful rooms
  • Inviting terrace with mountain views
  • Breakfast buffet includes strudel

Cons

  • Checkout is at 10:30 am
  • A short walk from the center
  • Too primary-colored for some

The Penz

$$ | Adolf-Pichler-Platz 3, Innsbruck, A-6020, Austria

The ultramodern steel-and-glass architecture of this luxury hotel, designed by the renowned French architect Dominique Perrault, is a striking contrast to the Old Town and has a purposeful, business feel that will make traveling executives feel right at home. The modern, funky lobby still has lots of wood and leather, and the guest rooms are elegant. The rooftop American Bar makes a fine gathering spot, with panoramic Alpine views and a selection of local politicians and captains of industry. Cocktails can be created to your specification, or try a signature Fifth Floor (whisky, orange, lime, and peach).

Pros

  • Sleek design
  • Great breakfast
  • Popular rooftop bar

Cons

  • No spa or sauna
  • Can feel a bit sterile
  • Rooms above delivery entrance are noisy

Schwarzer Adler

$$$ | Kaiserjägerstrasse 2, Innsbruck, A-6020, Austria

The vaulted cellars of this 500-year-old building were once stables for Emperor Maximilian's horses; now they host glittering events in atmospheric surroundings, and the hotel attracts those in search of a romantic experience. Most guest rooms are creatively decorated—the Swarovski Dream is a suite with a crystal bathroom (and crystals in the ceiling over the bath), and a turreted corner sitting area. The rooftop terrace offers an eye-popping view of the city and the mountains, and is the ideal place to enjoy an aperitif. The small spa is one of the most intimate in Innsbruck.

Pros

  • Wonderfully intimate spa
  • Romantic ambience
  • Every room is different

Cons

  • Only one elevator
  • Some rooms face busy street
  • No longer has a restaurant

Tautermann

$$ | Stamserfeld 5, Innsbruck, A-6020, Austria

This solid red-shuttered house, a friendly family-run hotel, is within a five-minute walk of the city center, but is in a quiet area across the river. It offers great value and spacious rooms gleaming with natural woods and old-fashioned style. Some of the upper rooms on the west side have large bay windows with gorgeous views of the mountains. The delights of the Old Town, and a wide array of restaurants, are close by.

Pros

  • Very quiet location outside the center
  • Inexpensive rates
  • Free parking

  • Located up a steep hill
  • Furnishings a little dated
