Fodor's Expert Review Erzherzog Johann
Sackstrasse 3–5, Graz, Styria, A-8010, Austria Fodor's Choice
Travelers who prefer a traditionally elegant city hotel will be happy with this historic establishment in a 16th-century building. It is ideally located on a corner of the Hauptplatz in the Old City. Rooms are furnished charmingly, some in Biedermeier style, some with exotic themes and canopied beds in red or purple velvet. All rooms open onto a sunny and luxuriant winter garden. Café-Restaurant Erzherzog Johann is the perfect place for breakfast, or traditional pastries, such as apfel strudel (apple strudel), and coffee. Every Thusday afternoon at 3, the hotel has an English tea, and Saturday afternoons have special meals from the hotel's cookbook. The Ernst Fuchs bar, though closed in July and August, is named after and inspired by the famous Austrian painter Ernst Fuchs, and is something on a Graz Institution.
