The Buccaneer

$$$ | 5007 Estate Shoys, Shoys, 00824, U.S. Virgin Islands Fodor's Choice

Aimed at travelers who want everything at their fingertips, this upscale but family-friendly resort has sandy beaches, multiple restaurants, golf, tennis, a spa, and swimming pools. A palm-tree-lined main drive leads to the large, pink main building atop a hill; guest facilities and quarters are scattered across the manicured grounds of a 340-acre former sugar plantation. Spacious rooms are tropical in style, with tile floors, four-poster beds, massive wardrobes of pale wood, marble baths, and local art. The resort offers a wide range of accommodations, from hotel rooms to spacious private villas. The beachside Doubloon rooms are the largest and are steps from the sand, but you can be perfectly comfortable no matter where you stay. The resort also has an 18-hole waterfront golf course and an excellent tennis center with eight courts, a pro shop, lessons, and night play.

Pros

  • Beachfront location
  • Numerous activities
  • Nice golf course

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Insular environment
  • Need a car to get around

Cinnamon Bay Campground

$ | Northshore Road, Rte 20, Cinnamon Bay, U.S. Virgin Islands Fodor's Choice

Glamping is a good way to describe the vibe here, especially if you book an eco-tent, complete with bunks, basic cooking gear, and electricity, or a cottage, sturdily built on concrete pads with beds, ceiling fans, kitchen utensils, electricity, and outdoor picnic tables. There are bare spots too for those who want to bring their own tent or rent one. Restrooms and showers, a small store, a restaurant, and water-sports rental right on the beach make for a complete campground resort.

The Fred

$$ | 605 Strand St., Frederiksted, 00840, U.S. Virgin Islands Fodor's Choice

This adults-only boutique hotel saucily beckons you to “Sleep with Fred” in one of a dozen bright and stylishly appointed guest rooms housed in a quartet of new and restored colonial buildings. Reception and the lobby are in Totten House, which dates from 1790 but has been colorfully redecorated with bright blue walls, lime leather couches, and an oversized framed painting of a jaunty rooster. The centrally located pool is steps from the bar, restaurant, blingy boutique shop, and a pint-size spa, and a roof deck makes a good vantage point for people-watching.

Gallows Point Resort

$$$$ | Bay St., 3AAA Estate Enighed, Cruz Bay, 00831, U.S. Virgin Islands Fodor's Choice

You're a short walk from restaurants and shops at this waterfront location just outside Cruz Bay, but once you step into your condo, the hustle and bustle are left behind. The upper-level apartments have loft bedrooms and the best views. The harborside villas get better trade winds, but they're a tad noisier. Tropical rooms have wicker furniture, tile floors, and brightly colored spreads in colors that reflect the sea and sky. Solar power makes the energy you use here green. There is a small convenience store--coffee shop on property.

Pros

  • Walk to shopping
  • Excellent restaurant
  • Comfortably furnished rooms

Cons

  • Some rooms can be noisy
  • Mediocre beach

Mafolie Hotel

$$$ | 7091 Estate Mafolie, Charlotte Amalie, 00802, U.S. Virgin Islands Fodor's Choice

The view and the value are the selling points of this simply furnished family-run hotel perched 800 feet above Charlotte Amalie's harbor. A few rooms at pool level don't have much of a breeze, making air-conditioning a must. Rooms above the restaurant are tiny and lack privacy in the evening, because of the steady stream of diners. Rooms 101 and 102 have the best views. The restaurant is known for its well-prepared Continental and Caribbean cuisine.

Pros

  • Fantastic views
  • Nice restaurant and bar
  • Friendly staff

Cons

  • Small pool

Right on a gorgeous stretch of white beach, yet still close to Frederiksted's dining scene, the adults-only Sand Castle has a tropical charm that harks back to a simpler time in the Caribbean. Rooms, which have contemporary decor, tile floors, and bright fabrics, come in several sizes and locations. Some have kitchens or kitchenettes, and many have sea views; several rooms cluster around a clothing-optional pool across the street from the main hotel building. Bolongo Bay Beach Resort

$$$ | Rte. 30, Bolongo, 00802, U.S. Virgin Islands

All the rooms at this all-inclusive, family-run resort tucked along a palm-lined beach have balconies with ocean views, and down the beach are nine condos with full kitchens. This place is more flip-flop casual than fancy, and the friendliness of the longtime staff keeps visitors coming back. The beach is a bit rocky for swimming, but sails aboard the resort's 53-foot catamaran, Heavenly Days, and excursions arranged by the on-site PADI Five Star dive shop are popular, as are a number of complimentary water sports, including an introductory scuba lesson and aqua-tricycles. You can opt out of the all-inclusive plan and pay less, but then you'd want to rent a car, because the resort is a bit isolated. The fresh Caribbean spiny lobster tail at Iggies Oasis shouldn't be missed.

Pros

  • Family-run property
  • On the beach

Cons

Club Comanche Hotel St. Croix

$ | 1 Strand St., Christiansted, 00820, U.S. Virgin Islands

This historic townhouse built in 1756 is located in the center of town within walking distance to art galleries, duty-free shops, custom jewelers, fine restaurants, waterfront bars, and the seaplane terminal. A wooden bridge over the street connects the older building to the pool and some newer rooms. Although it doesn't offer the amenities of a chain hotel, it was good enough for former President Jimmy Carter when he visited St. Croix in 2010. If you want to go to a beach, take a short walk to catch the Protestant Cay ferry.

Pros
