Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort

$$ | 7012 Av. Boca de Cangrejos, Carolina, 00979, Puerto Rico

This 12-story resort tries to be all things to all people—and succeeds to a great degree. Harried business executives appreciate its location near the airport and its high-tech offerings. Families prefer the many dining options and the fact that a particularly peaceful section of the city's best beach is just outside. On a quiet hillside overlooking the ocean, this no-frills guesthouse is about as clean and comfortable as it gets. Rooms fall into one of three categories—Honeymoon, Family, or "Surfari"—and come with tropical furniture, TVs, microwaves, and refrigerators. The property is beautifully landscaped with lush gardens, a pool, and a peaceful courtyard where breakfast is served. For a bit more privacy, the poolside room has its own entrance and is more spacious than those in the main house. DoubleTree by Hilton San Juan at Gallery Plaza

$$$ | 105 Av. de Diego, San Juan, 00911, Puerto Rico

Slightly geared to business travelers, the DoubleTree offers attractive rooms and an excellent value for anyone who doesn't need to be in central Condado or on the beach. It's across the street from a 24-hour supermarket and wine shop, near the on-ramp to a major highway, and within walking distance of lots of main attractions and restaurants. The immaculate rooms are modern yet warm, decorated in rich reds and browns. Some also have a Murphy bed (of the same mattress quality as the main bed). There's a coffeemaker in each room, ergonomic desk chairs, warm cookies at check-in, and a free shuttle to the beach. There's clearly an emphasis on comfortable details that make a hotel stay more pleasant.

Pros

  • Excellent value for the neighborhood
  • Good on-site dining options
  • Free shuttle to beach

Cons

  • A bit of a walk to the beach and the main drag in Condado

El Blok Hotel

$$ | 158 Calle Flamboyán, 00765, Puerto Rico
This boutique hotel, which has received rave reviews for its unique architecture and design (minimalist concrete, open-air common spaces), is a great place to unplug and relax. Not everyone's enchanted by the minimalism, however, which also defines the room amenities: there are no phones or TVs, and storage space is nonexistent.

Pros

  • Continental breakfast included
  • Rooftop plunge pool
  • On-site restaurant

Cons

  • Can be noisy
  • May be too minimalist for some tastes

El Colonial Hotel

$$$ | 312 Calle San Francisco, San Juan, 00901, Puerto Rico

Formerly the Da House Hotel, El Colonial is a 33-room adults-only boutique hotel that mixes modern with historic charm. This renovated property is located in the heart of Old San Juan steps away from shops, restaurants, and nightlife. Most rooms are bigger than you'd expect in a former convent, though the amount of natural light varies depending on the room. The original tile floors have been preserved, and many of the furnishings are antiques, contrasting with sleek, modern accents. If you're an early-to-bed person, you'll probably want to request an interior room; if you plan on staying downstairs until the last encore, it won't matter which room you take. The friendly staff are eager to please with advice on what to do and can be reached via Whatsapp. The hotel is pet-friendly and has a 24-hour open bar.

Pros

  • Pet-friendly

El Conquistador Resort

$$$ | 1000 Av. El Conquistador, Fajardo, 00738, Puerto Rico

El Conquistador is one of Puerto Rico's most iconic hotels. This is a place where pastel-painted "villages" of ultramodern accommodations are arranged on an oceanside bluff and a shuttle whisks guests to a beach on Palomino Island. Furnishings here are low to the ground, ensuring that nothing obscures the ocean view. There are seven different pools on-site, as well as a water park for kids (and kids at heart). The resort has a cluster of top-drawer restaurants specializing in everything from steak and seafood to diner-style burgers, and a handful of boutiques offer retail therapy.

Pros

  • Bright, spacious rooms
  • Unbeatable views of nearby islands
  • Good dining options

Cons

  • Large-scale, posthurricane renovation in progress
  • Long waits at funicular running between levels
  • Hidden fees including parking and kids' club (and you need a car)

El Faro Parador

$$ | Rte. 107, Km 2.1, Aguadilla, 00603, Puerto Rico

This family-friendly hotel isn't very close to the lighthouse from which it takes its name, but it's a good place to keep in mind if you're driving along the coast and need to stop for the night (keep a sharp eye out for the "Parador" sign on Route 107, as it's easy to miss). Cheerfully decorated rooms surround a pair of pools, and there is a game room and basketball court for kids. The closest beach is Playa Crashboat, only five minutes by car.

The Gallery Inn

$ | 204–206 Calle Norzagaray, San Juan, 00901, Puerto Rico

No two rooms in this 200-year-old mansion are alike, but all have four-poster beds, handwoven tapestries, and quirky antiques; indeed, every nook and cranny here is adorned with owner Jan D'Esopo's paintings, bronze sculptures, ceramic busts, and plaques. You can view the coastline from several rooms and the rooftop terrace. Enjoy a daily wine happy hour on the poolside patio, or head down to the Beach House in La Perla to watch the sunset and take in the ocean breeze. Hix Island House

$$$ | Rte. 995, Km 1.5, 00765, Puerto Rico

Constructed entirely of concrete and set in a tropical forest, the four buildings of this luxurious hotel echo the granite boulders strewn around Vieques, blending with the surroundings. Award-winning architect John Hix's spare aesthetic permeates guest rooms, which have dramatic lines and sexy curves. Some might find the property cold and uninviting, however, regardless of inspiration and originality. Sunny terraces, panoramic open walls, and private outdoor showers keep nature nearby, although the nighttime songs of coquí frogs might disrupt your sleep. The resort's embrace of the environment crosses from form to function in the use of recycled water and solar-power systems. A recent addition to the Hix property is Casa Solaris, so named because it is an entirely solar-powered guesthouse. Even the swimming pool is eco-friendly.
