2 Best Hotels in Tikehau, Tuamotu Archipelago

Background Illustration for Hotels

Tikehau is a new frontier when it comes to accommodations, and that's half the appeal. So don't expect the luxuries of home, and you won't be disappointed. Only three of the island's 10 hotels and pensions have hot water and only one has air-conditioning, but what you'll get is clean, comfortable family-run lodgings with three meals a day and a little thatched hut by the lagoon. The Tikehau Pearl Resort has most of the creature comforts including air-conditioned overwater bungalows. Only half the pensions accept credit cards, and as there is no bank in town, you'll need to bring a wad of cash. The Pearl resort and most of the small hotels can organize excursions.

Tikehau Pearl Beach Resort

$$$ | Motu Kahaia, French Polynesia

This is the only resort on the island, and it's a lovely haven with a good variety of beach and overwater bungalows. Beach bungalows have great indoor-outdoor bathrooms that can be closed off from the bedroom at night. The overwater suites are sumptuous with soaring ceilings, stylish timber furniture, deep oval baths, and air-conditioning. There's a dive center on-site and a good variety of activities.

Pros

  • If you're looking to get away from it all, this is isolated and private

Cons

  • Not all the bungalows have a/c
  • Isolated may not be your ideal of paradise
  • Limited restaurant menu
