The City Center (CBD) is designed in a grid formation, with myriad alleyways twisting between them, often containing restaurants, galleries, and bars. The CBD is bounded by Spring Street in the east, Victoria Street to the north, Flinders Street to the South, and Spencer Street to the West. The Federation Square area, opposite the Flinders Street Station, is considered the CBD’s heart and is an ideal starting point. The most popular shopping areas are the elegant eastern end of Collins Street and the busy pedestrian mall of Bourke Street. Spring Street holds many of the city’s historic buildings from the mid-1800s.
