Hanoi Hotel

$ | 228B Truong Chinh St., Son La, Vietnam

With its modern design, the Hanoi Hotel is one of the better lodging options in Son La, and most of the rooms have balconies that offer decent views over the small town and out toward the surrounding rice fields and mountains. Service is on the erratic side at times, but staff is eager to please and can offer information on nearby sights. Breakfast is not exactly tourist-friendly, so buy some bread or snacks on the way in.

Happy Farm Tien Giang

$$ | 35 Ap Bo Xe, Xa Phu Thanh, Huyen Chau Thanh, My Tho, Vietnam

At this little setup 8 km (5 miles) from My Tho run by a lovely husband-and-wife team, Khoi and Oanh, you'll choose between simple wooden or solid bungalows, both with air-conditioning and an outdated en suite outdoor bathroom, but the big attraction here is the minihobby farm, which is home to chickens, ducks, rabbits, geese, dogs, and cats. Oanh supervises the kitchen, which turns out fabulous Vietnamese home cooking. It's very popular with Vietnamese families on weekends, when Khoi organizes a full itinerary of kids' activities, including tug-of-war, sack races, and fishing (the old-fashioned way, in the water with a bamboo basket).

Pros

  • Family-friendly
  • Farm animals
  • Vietnamese home-cooking

Cons

  • Rooster crowing
  • Not on the river with no attractions in the immediate area
  • No hot water

Hoi An Ancient House Resort & Spa

$$$ | 377 Cua Dai, Hoi An, Vietnam

Tucked away in a tropical garden, this thin-walled hotel pays tribute to Vietnamese culture with its rice paper factory and a 200-year-old house, where fifth-generation family members still live today. The white buildings with clay-tiled roofs resemble a small village. Each building houses spacious rooms with four-poster beds draped in netting. Nice touches are the fresh flowers and fruit, and the rice pastries wrapped in banana leaves that the staff brings at turndown. Rooms include free Wi-Fi and some come with a laptop to use during your stay. Centering the property is a circular pool; Cua Dai Beach is a 10-minute drive away. Complimentary bikes and shuttle service are offered, and motorbikes can be rented next door for 150,000d per day.

Pros

  • Great breakfast
  • Local charm
  • Imaginatively renovated

Cons

  • No elevator
  • Tall bathtubs are awkward for exiting

Hoi An Beach Resort

$$$ | 01 Cua Dai St., Hoi An, Vietnam

The best feature of Hoi An's oldest beach resort is its riverside setting, and river views somewhat make up for the lack of beach (rapid coastal erosion took the last of the beach). The renovations have successfully injected style and character, with sleek lines, colorful soft furnishings, and local artwork. Bathrooms are modern and luxurious, with Western-size tubs, monsoon showers, and marble accents.

Pros

  • Some rooms have river views
  • Impeccable service
  • Lovely pool area overlooking the river

Cons

  • You have to cross a busy road to get to what's left of the beach
  • Restaurant is average
  • Expensive considering beach is not easily accessible

Hoi An Historic Hotel

$$$$ | 10 Tran Hung Dao St., Hoi An, Vietnam

This tour-group darling and one of Hoi An's oldest resort hotels is renowned for its friendly staff and fantastic location, a five-minute walk from Old Town. Rooms have Asian elements, dark wooden floors, black-and-white prints of Old Town as wall art, and enormous but very firm beds. Bathrooms are spacious and well-lit. Facilities are top-notch and include a large pool, which is unusual for such a centrally located hotel. The spa and restaurant are good, but there are cheaper options available nearby.

Pros

  • Wonderful staff
  • Town location
  • Family-friendly

Cons

  • Pool and street-facing rooms can be noisy

Hotel Continental Saigon

$$$ | 132--134 Dong Khoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Directly across from the Opera House, history buffs will want to head to this French-colonial-style hotel, where Graham Greene's classic The Quiet American was set and the author himself stayed, in room 214; it was also the meeting place of journalists and diplomats during the Vietnam War. The outdoor courtyard and dining area date from the late 19th century—a delightful place to relax with a drink beneath frangipani trees, some of which were planted in 1880. In this setting, it's not hard to envision the way the hotel must have looked in its heyday.

Pros

  • Central location
  • One of the city's historic sights
  • Beautiful courtyard for breakfast

Cons

  • Rooms facing the street can be noisy
  • No swimming pool
  • Decor slightly dated

Hotel Grand Saigon

$$$$ | 8 Dong Khoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Although more modest than the Majestic or the Continental hotels, this old colonial establishment evokes a bygone era of Francophone Saigon in the heart of the old Rue Catinat, where it's been since 1930. While the outdoor pool is nice, unfortunately, the Grand is state-owned and suffers accordingly compared to some of the international chains when it comes to maintenance. The rooms are light and airy, with wooden floorboards giving them some old-world charm, and the higher floors have lovely views of the river.

Pros

  • A true sense of history
  • As locations go, this is as central as you get
  • River views from some rooms on upper floors

Cons

  • Dated decor
  • Sound insulation can be an issue
  • Service, while mostly good, can be indifferent at times

Hotel Majestic

$$$$ | 1 Dong Khoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

On the waterfront overlooking the Saigon River, this is one of Vietnam's truly great colonial hotels, steeped with nostalgia and old-world charm that has been accumulating since 1925. Rooms, with their high ceilings, Art Deco touches, and marble bathrooms, strike a delicate balance between airy and intimate, while the pool offers a great vantage point to lie back and soak in the tropical colonial vibe. Be sure to sip a drink at the rooftop bar at night when the city lights sparkle below.

Pros

  • Spacious rooms with high ceilings
  • Rooftop bar and pool on site
  • Prime location

Cons

  • The fact that the government owns this hotel does occasionally peek through the usually professional service standards
  • Riverview rooms can be noisy
  • Some fixtures are dated

All 40 of the riverfront rooms of Hue Riverside Boutique Resort and Spa sit in a verdant 10-acre pomelo garden and line the Huong River. Most of the land is filled with seemingly thousands of pomelo trees, many banana trees, and three organic vegetable gardens, which make this eco-resort one of the most poetic and tranquil getaways in town. Both the restaurant and spa source the vegetables and herbs from the gardens. Solar panels and a windmill help supply electricity to the resort.

Huong Phong Ho Coc Resort

The accommodations may be simple, but here you can enjoy a laid-back, local vibe right on one of the best beaches on this coast. There's a row of palm-thatched shacks between the pool and the beach, where guests can lounge while the Huong Phong Restaurant, serving Vietnamese and International dishes, has a covered sea-view deck. There's also a seafood restaurant.

Hyatt Regency Danang Resort & Spa

$$$$ | 5 Truong Sa St., Danang, Vietnam

Right in the middle of the coastal strip between Hoi An and Danang, the fabulous Hyatt Regency is the perfect beach compromise for those that can't decide between the two cities (both are within a 25-minute drive). This modern resort is a maze of similar-looking structures stretched along miles of white sandy coast and well manicured gardens. Rooms have lots of wood, a comfortable lounging area, and minimal styling, and the bathrooms are of the glass and optional blind variety, so not very private. As with any Hyatt property, the list of facilities and activities is vast. Standouts are the enormous pool and kids' program, although the kids' club comes at an extra cost if you leave your little ones there for extended periods.

Pros

JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort & Spa

$$$$ | An Thoi Ward, Phu Quoc, Vietnam

As you would expect from a hotel interior designed by Bill Bensley, the resort is a bold, over-the-top, maximalist fantasy theme as a fictional French university from the 1890s, bursting with more than 5,000 European antiques and imaginative objets d'art. Various wings are named after academic departments, such as the Department of Agriculture, and every room within has a horticultural theme. Guests can relax at any of the three public pools, which includes an adults-only pool and kids' pool—or their own private pool if staying in a villa.
