A few minutes' walk from Kata Beach, this resort comprises a spacious garden with four large swimming pools, lush greenery, beautiful stone-carved fountains, and a complex of villas and rooms that are part Moroccan riad, part soaring Thai temple. Two-story luxury villas have exclusive access to two pools. The service is impeccable and the restaurant is decent. There are poolside and garden rooms; the former are preferable.

This addition to Phuket Town provides a pleasant option from the larger, often less charming hotels in the area. If you like your huts to be of progressive design, go Somewhere Else---the six octagonal rooms in the front of the clearing are particularly cool, with fold-down windows, wooden floors, and loose-pebble bathroom floors. This resort is nothing fancy (expect cold water and fans), but it has a great vibe, and you'll enjoy playing Ping-Pong with friendly staff in the common room or just watching the sunset on the chill-out pillows strewn on various wooden platforms. Note that there's no hot water, but your shower will be warm from the sun.

With a fun slide plunging into a big pool and several two-bedroom villas (each with large multi-bed rooms), Southern Lanta is understandably popular with families. Standard rooms are bungalows built closely to each other with slightly run-down exteriors but comfortable interiors. Seaside rooms are newer and have sofas indoors and deck chairs outdoors for maximum lounging.

One of the first upscale resorts in the area to market the "less is more" philosophy, SriLanta remains an island getaway for edgy urbanites. Breezy rooms are basic, but have comfortable lounging areas and are tastefully decorated. Sadly, most rooms have no view, and the beach is a short walk down the hill, which can be uncomfortable for some. The spa has massage tables on a platform above a large fishpond. SriLanta is reasonably priced for what you get (one of the nicest resorts on one of the nicest beaches), but the service is quite ordinary for such an extraordinary resort.

On the eastern end of Noppharat Thara, Srisuksant is a short walk from Ao Nang's shops and directly across from the beach. Although that beach is not ideal for swimming, longtail boats are available to whisk you away to more suitable spots, and if you feel like walking west a few miles, you can swim or picnic in the shade by the Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park headquarters. The resort has two swimming pools for cooling off if you're too lazy to do any of the above. The clientele here is mostly Thai families, although Westerners are greeted warmly. The bright rooms have tile floors and small decks, and some have partial ocean views.

This resort caters to families, with well-organized daily activities of kids of all ages and babysitting services, as well as multiple pools and a beachfront location. Other high points include the well-kept gardens, waterside massage services, and a breakfast hall organized with military precision. The rooms are spacious and simply yet tastefully decorated.

It's just a few minutes walk from the beach but it means the prices at this small friendly hotel are quite reasonable, and some rooms have balconies overlooking the street along the beach. This is one of the cleanest nicest budget options in the area. The staff is a joy, always attentive and making every effort to make your stay fun and enjoyable.

Almost completely concealed by a grove of coconut palms, this resort overlooks the quiet Pansea Beach. You know this place is special as soon as you walk into the lobby, which has a sweeping view of the Andaman Sea. An octagonal pool is set amid the tropical flora. The interiors, done in wood and stone, with high pointed ceilings, are simple but elegant.

This resort is as much an architectural and interior-design exhibition as it is a sophisticated and tranquil retreat. It is both traditionally tropical and innovatively contemporary; occasionally, the two styles meld: deluxe superior rooms have colorful tile floors but incredibly romantic outdoor baths. The resort's main dining area is a feast for the eyes as well as the palate, and the two bars make up for the fairly isolated location on the quiet northern end of Klong Dao Beach.
