Royal Phuket City Hotel

$$ | 154 Phang Nga Rd., Phuket, 83000, Thailand

This is arguably Phuket Town's best address, with rooms that are spacious and contemporary. The hotel exemplifies art deco chic, and the staff is attentive, professional, and courteous. The large Club Asia health club is popular with locals. The top-floor Thai Thai Room has outdoor seating and great views; the Cappuccino 154 deli on the ground floor caters its baked goods to other coffee shops around town.

The Sarojin

$$$$ | 60 Moo 2, Phang Nga, 82190, Thailand

This secluded luxury beach resort’s smaller size makes it intimate and exclusive. All residence types have something special: garden rooms have large oval tubs in pebble-strewn indoor gardens, suites have outdoor tubs, and pool residences have private plunge pools and salas with lounge chairs. There are two restaurants on the property, Ficus and Edge, serving Thai and contemporary Mediterranean cuisine. The resort provides a variety of activities, including day trips to the Similan Islands aboard a private speedboat.

Pros

  • Intimate and exclusive
  • Cooking classes
  • Unique design

Cons

  • High prices
  • Some rooms a bit worn
  • Staff can be aloof

Sawasdee Village

$$$$ | 38 Katekwan Rd., Kata Beach, 83100, Thailand

A few minutes' walk from Kata Beach, this resort comprises a spacious garden with four large swimming pools, lush greenery, beautiful stone-carved fountains, and a complex of villas and rooms that are part Moroccan riad, part soaring Thai temple. Two-story luxury villas have exclusive access to two pools. The service is impeccable and the restaurant is decent. There are poolside and garden rooms; the former are preferable.

Pros

  • Attentive staff
  • Good dining
  • Shuttle to beach and shopping

Cons

Recommended Fodor's Video

Sino House

$$ | 1 Montri Rd., Phuket, 83000, Thailand

This addition to Phuket Town provides a pleasant option from the larger, often less charming hotels in the area. Bamboo and wood decor in the lobby reflect the inspiration behind the hotel's name and theme, which celebrate Phuket's Chinese heritage. The rooms and suites are spacious, with clean lines and an impressive painting in each. Large windows let in lots of light, but the urban views are a bit of a letdown. Service is attentive, although the standard of English spoken at the reception desk is poor.

Pros

  • Central
  • Spa discounts for guests
  • Nice decor

Cons

  • Staff's English is poor
  • Noisy air-conditioning
  • Dull views

Somewhere Else

$ | 253 Moo 3, Koh Lanta, 81150, Thailand

If you like your huts to be of progressive design, go Somewhere Else---the six octagonal rooms in the front of the clearing are particularly cool, with fold-down windows, wooden floors, and loose-pebble bathroom floors. This resort is nothing fancy (expect cold water and fans), but it has a great vibe, and you'll enjoy playing Ping-Pong with friendly staff in the common room or just watching the sunset on the chill-out pillows strewn on various wooden platforms. Note that there's no hot water, but your shower will be warm from the sun.

Southern Lanta Resort

$ | 105 Klong Dao Beach, Koh Lanta, 81150, Thailand

With a fun slide plunging into a big pool and several two-bedroom villas (each with large multi-bed rooms), Southern Lanta is understandably popular with families. Standard rooms are bungalows built closely to each other with slightly run-down exteriors but comfortable interiors. Seaside rooms are newer and have sofas indoors and deck chairs outdoors for maximum lounging.

Pros

  • Family-friendly
  • Good location
  • Pleasant restaurant

Cons

  • Needs redecoration
  • Pool crowds easily
  • Limited views

SriLanta Resort and Spa

$$ | 111 Moo 6, Koh Lanta, 81150, Thailand

One of the first upscale resorts in the area to market the "less is more" philosophy, SriLanta remains an island getaway for edgy urbanites. Breezy rooms are basic, but have comfortable lounging areas and are tastefully decorated. Sadly, most rooms have no view, and the beach is a short walk down the hill, which can be uncomfortable for some. The spa has massage tables on a platform above a large fishpond. SriLanta is reasonably priced for what you get (one of the nicest resorts on one of the nicest beaches), but the service is quite ordinary for such an extraordinary resort.

Pros

  • Great in-room amenities
  • Yoga classes
  • Nice pool

Cons

  • Staff a bit standoffish
  • Facilities are showing their age
  • Not all rooms have sea views

Srisuksant Resort

$$ | 145 Moo 3, Ao Nang, 81000, Thailand

On the eastern end of Noppharat Thara, Srisuksant is a short walk from Ao Nang's shops and directly across from the beach. Although that beach is not ideal for swimming, longtail boats are available to whisk you away to more suitable spots, and if you feel like walking west a few miles, you can swim or picnic in the shade by the Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park headquarters. The resort has two swimming pools for cooling off if you're too lazy to do any of the above. The clientele here is mostly Thai families, although Westerners are greeted warmly. The bright rooms have tile floors and small decks, and some have partial ocean views.

Pros

  • Nice pools
  • Well set up for kids and families
  • Good location

Cons

  • Not all rooms have elevator access
  • Not all rooms have views
  • Soundproofing not ideal

Twin Lotus Resort & Spa

$$$$ | 199 Moo 1 Saladan, Koh Lanta, 81150, Thailand

This resort is as much an architectural and interior-design exhibition as it is a sophisticated and tranquil retreat. It is both traditionally tropical and innovatively contemporary; occasionally, the two styles meld: deluxe superior rooms have colorful tile floors but incredibly romantic outdoor baths. The resort's main dining area is a feast for the eyes as well as the palate, and the two bars make up for the fairly isolated location on the quiet northern end of Klong Dao Beach.

Pros

  • Quality dining
  • Appealing in-room facilities
  • Free shuttle to Saladan Market

Cons

  • Decor not for everyone
  • May be too quiet for families
  • Service can be lax

Westin Siray Bay Resort and Spa

$$ | 21, Ratsada, Phuket, 83000, Thailand

Overlooking quiet Siray Bay, this sprawling, albeit slightly dated, property is a few minutes' drive to Phuket Town but has everything on-site, from kids' activities to a pampering spa. Some villas are equipped with kitchens, some rooms have shared pools, but pretty much everybody gets killer sunsets, from the rooms or from the common areas.

Wyndham Grand Nai Harn Beach Phuket

$$ | 15/328 Moo 1, Soi Naya, Nai Harn, 83100, Thailand

Set near a lagoon among well-maintained gardens, this modern resort is just a short walk from Nai Harn beach. Rooms have private balconies, and there's a restaurant and bar, a swimming pool, a fitness center, and free Wi-Fi. Babysitting services are available for families.
