Yeongnam Alps

While not quiet as lofty or majestic as the European Alps, the Yeongnam Alps still possess myriad charms. This outlying cluster of Taebaek range contains several peaks over 1,000 meters (.6 miles)—tall by Korean standards—and the area is full of valleys, ridges, rivers, and waterfalls that makes it the region's undisputed natural playground. Add cultural treasures such as the Tongdosa Temple complex, and you have several ideal side excursions within an hour of central Busan.

While there are a few options of places to make your base, the town of Eonyang may be your best bet, as it has plenty of restaurants and accommodations and is close to most of the action.
