Getting Here and Around

The central valley town of Nagiso is one hour south of Matsumoto on the JR Chuo Line. Tsumago is a 10-minute bus ride (¥300) from JR Nagiso Station. Magome is closer to JR Nakatsugawa Station, which is 12 minutes south on the same line. Both towns are served by buses from the Nagiso and Nakatsugawa stations, so you can take a bus to one village and return from the other. Local buses between Magome and Tsumago are infrequent. A taxi costs about ¥3,000. To get to Takayama, take the JR Chuo Line from Nakatsugawa or Nagiso to Tajimi, change to a local JR Takayama Line train to Mina-Ota, then an express train to Takayama (total four hours). There are also infrequent buses from Nakatsugawa to Gero, 45 minutes from Takayama by express train. There are also direct highway buses from Magome to Tokyo’s Shinjuku Station (4½ hours).
