Cantral Okinawa

Central Okinawa Main Island is where you find the bulk of American forces in Japan. It can be a little surreal when your rental car is suddenly dwarfed by a Humvee or the even bigger JLTV. Just as likely is that during your day at a tranquil beach, castle, or picnic spot you'll be given an unexpected airshow as F-15 fighters, KC-135 Stratotankers, and AWACS make their way back to Kadena Air Base. The west coast of central Okinawa Main Island is still however a great place to visit. Chatan Town has a lively multicultural feel, varied restaurants, and great shopping opportunities, while the Yomitan Peninsula has excellent beaches, dive spots, clifftop walks, and a pottery community. Chatan is easily accessible by public transportation, but exploring Yomitan is best done by car.
