Fodor's Expert Review Magnolia Bed & Breakfast
36 Yanqing Lu, Shanghai, Shanghai Shi, 200031, China
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
At the intersection of five tree-lined streets in the Former French Concession, the Magnolia is a charming little B&B that's perfect if you want to be in the center of the action. Because the building is a 1930s lane house, the five rooms here are on the small side, but the lively neighborhood will keep you busy all day. Half the block is very local, with a chaotic vegetable market and elderly Shanghainese chatting up a storm. The other half is lined with expat-centric bars and restaurants, so there are plenty of places to eat. The street can get noisy, especially on the weekends, so Magnolia provides earplugs.
PROS
- great location, rich in character
- a taste of local culture. Pros: it can be loud
- there's no 24-hour service
- there's no elevator
