Fodor's Expert Review The Pottinger
21 Stanley St., Hong Kong, n/a Hong Kong, Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China See on Map
Historic charm and modern luxury combine at this beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of Central. Intimately decorated in delicate shades and tasteful floral patterns, The Pottinger creates a haven amidst the hectic hustle and bustle of one of Hong Kong’s busiest heritage neighborhoods. Guests will enjoy the personal service, spacious rooms and novelty of the juxtaposition of a hotel so at odds with its immediate surroundings.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Some guests will find the steep hills that lead to and from the hotel a struggle. However, the Central elevators are on hand to make the route to The Pottinger much easier on the legs.
room
The hotel might appear constricted from the outside but the rooms offer a surprising amount of space considering the exterior views. A very definite interior theme of delicate pinks, neutral creams and floral blossom motifs create a breezy, comely feel in the bedrooms that can feel like an oasis of calm against the frenetic pace outside.
Hammering and drilling seem to be in constant rotation and the sound of construction works can penetrate the hotel’s walls by day, although that’s par for the course in this neighborhood.
bathroom
Elegant marble bathrooms come with walk-in rain showers and enough space for a couple to embrace in a romantic display of teeth brushing together at the single vanity.
If you fancy a soak in a tub you’ll have to upgrade to a suite for that particular pleasure.
lobby
An inviting entrance salon welcomes guests to The Pottinger with its pretty array of floral bouquets and wingback chairs.
dining
Dining choices are numerous in the hotel’s immediate vicinity but should you want to stay in and eat, The Pottinger has high class options of its own. Choose from the grand Gradini Ristorante E Bar Italiano or the two-Michelin starred Ta Vie for fine dining Asian cuisine.
drinking
Dark woods and low lights set the scene for cocktails in the pleasantly atmospheric bar, The Envoy.
LOCATION
Getting Around
Step out the door of the hotel and you’ll find yourself immediately bombarded with the sensory overload of Central. This is one of Hong Kong’s oldest neighborhoods and home to parts of the Heritage Trail, which is well worth exploring. Just up the hill (or escalator if you prefer) is Tai Kwun, a former prison turned arts centre. Taxis are frequently spotted but finding one not already in service can be difficult so walk down the hill to Central MTR for the metro.
Restaurants
No Hong Kong experience is complete without a trip to Lin Heung Teahouse (4-minute walk), where a mix of locals and tourists cram into a classic, no-frills space for dim sum. For something a little more in line with the hotel’s chic image, visit fine dining French restaurant Caprice (17-minute walk) at the nearby Four Seasons hotel.
WHY WE LIKE IT
The contrast between inside and out, the homely, well-designed rooms and the high-end dining choices all contribute to The Pottinger’s star quality. We love the location in the heart of Central and the intimacy of a hotel whose mere 68 rooms mean guest service is highly tailored.
