Fodor's Expert Review Renaissance Hong Kong Harbour View Hotel
1 Harbour Rd., Hong Kong, n/a Hong Kong, Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China See on Map
Corporate and leisure travelers will feel equally at home at the Renaissance Hong Kong Harbour View Hotel whose Wan Chai location right next to the harbor and Hong Kong Convention Centre is ideal for business and pleasure. Over 800 rooms are located in the hotel’s looming tower, whose interior blends traditional style with updated modern touches. Rooms are sumptuous and inspire a loyal following among the predominantly business crowd.
YOU SHOULD KNOW While close to Wan Chai the immediate vicinity is a ghost town at night when many restaurants close early in tandem with the Convention Centre.
room
The name of the hotel rings true, with two thirds of the 860 guest rooms offering grand harbour views (most of which that take in elements of the nightly laser show). Decorated in neutral, warm shades with polished wooden floors and grand floor-to-ceiling windows, the rooms are exceptionally well executed and most have separate sitting areas.
bathroom
Nowhere reflects the generous space of the rooms like the bathrooms. Separate standing showers and bathtubs often have views over the water.
lobby
So big it needs two lobbies, the welcome areas at the Renaissance Hong Kong Harbour View Hotel are generally a hive of activity as the connection to the Convention Centre complex brings in the crowds. Even so, the polished marble pillars and floors and seating areas create a comfortable environment.
pool
The large outdoor heated pool is part of resort-like grounds which contain a golf driving range, tennis courts and children’s playground. On the subject of the playground, the hotel is ace for families.
YOU SHOULD KNOW The pool is shared with the next door Grand Hyatt which can make it busy in high season.
gym
The simple gym houses an array of free weights and cardiovascular machines but doesn’t do a whole lot more to inspire workouts should you prefer a gym with a little personality.
dining
Guests with executive access can make the most of the executive lounge for breakfast and afternoon and evening snacks. Otherwise, enjoy the excellent breakfast buffet in Café Renaissance. Additionally, the rather swanky Dynasty will serve you some of the best BBQ pork in Hon Kong.
LOCATION
Getting Around
Right on the harbour, in the middle of Hong Kong Island, the location is a doozy. It may feel a little deserted at times but a quick walk over the covered walkways into Wan Chai and you’ll find yourself in the midst of one of the busiest neighbourhood in the city. Head in the opposite direction to the harbour front and there are plenty of eating and drinking options to be found, along with the Wan Chai Heritage Trail.
Restaurants
American-inspired classics use the freshest ingredients at the famous Stone Nullah Tavern (14-minute walk). For an exclusive night out, head to 22 Ships (15-minute walk), the restaurant from British chef Jason Atherton and eat the best tapas in the city.
WHY WE LIKE IT
Sophisticated interiors, spacious rooms with killer views and a resort-like exterior complex make the Renaissance Hong Kong Harbour View Hotel one of the most impressive, reliable hotels on Hong Kong Island. While the clientele is predominantly from a business base, we like that the hotel never feels overtly corporate.
