Kyaninga Lodge

Lake Kyaninga near Fort Portal, Fort Portal, Western Region, Uganda

Fodor’s Expert Review

Overlooking a cobalt-blue crater lake, the design of this fairy-tale property provides serious wow factor: Kyaninga took 130 men, seven years and more than 1,000 hand-carved logs to build. Eight chaletlike cottages perch high on the crater rim; intricate wooden walkways connect each building; while landscaped gardens and orchards (the source of delicious home-made preserves at breakfast) fan out across the valley below. Since it opened it's taken no time to become the number-one choice in the area. Kibale is nearby, but a variety of activities closer to home will keep guests happy for days: crater hikes; wild swimming in Lake Kyaninga; birding in the forest; trekking to the edge of the Albertine Rift; and even a round of golf at Toro Golf Club with a top Uganda player (sponsored by Kyaninga). If you struggle with steps ask for Cottage 4 or 5, as they are closest to the lodge.
