Getting Here and Around
The best way to explore the Western Cape is to rent a car and take to the roads. You need to be flexible to enjoy all this region has to offer, and public transportation is too limited. Navigating your way around is not difficult. There are three main routes out of the city: the N1, N2, and N7. The N1 and N2 take you to the Cape Winelands of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl, and the N7 heads up the West Coast. To reach the Overberg, take the N2 out of town and head up over Sir Lowry's Pass. Getting lost after taking a wrong turn can take you into unsafe areas, so plan your route before setting out and use GPS.

Thoza Tours. Run by Thomazile Stuurman (AKA "Mr. T"), Thoza Tours offers tailor-made tours for individuals or groups. Stuurman specializes in the whole Western Cape area, but has become known for his township tour, a cultural and historic tour which takes place in the Zwelihle (which means "place of beauty" in Xhosa) township (R700 for two people). He also offers full-day tours of the Overberg and the Cape Peninsula (where you can see the Indian Ocean meet the Atlantic Ocean), but Mr T. is very flexible and will cater to your interests. A full-day tour costs approximately R2,400 for two people. 072/203–7806; www.thozatours.co.za .
