Fodor's Expert Review Bouchard Finlayson
West of town off the R43, the R320 (Hemel-en-Aarde Valley Road) leads through the vineyards and orchards of the scenic Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and over Shaw's Pass to Caledon. A bit past Hamilton Russell Vineyards and with only 44 acres under vine, Bouchard Finlayson nevertheless thrills critics and wine lovers year after year. Winemaker Peter Finlayson makes good use of the cool sea breeze and unique terroir of the estate to create some fantastic deep-south wines. Finlayson, who has a great voice, maintains that Pinot Noir "is like opera. When it's great, it is pure seduction, almost hedonistic. There is no middle road." You might wish to lay down a few bottles of the much-lauded Tête de Cuvée Galpin Peak Pinot Noir, a velvety and fruity wine. The 2012 vintage is exceptional.
