Fodor's Expert Review Tutwa Desert Lodge

Southern Cross Game Reserve, Schuitdrift, Augrabies, Northern Cape, South Africa Fodor's Choice

Only a few lodges in South Africa are blessed with phenomenal locations, and Tutwa is one of them, but it's not for the seekers of the Big Five. The landscape here is more like that of Namibia's Hartmann Valley: wild, remote, mountainous desert. Extreme fly-fishing, canoeing, and spare but high-quality Kalahari game-viewing is what you're likely to experience best here. But at night, the many nocturnal creatures (including the aardvark, jackal, aardwolf, and maybe leopard) come out to play. The lodge offers a nanny service to help keep your kids entertained, making this a little piece of family safari heaven. The downstairs veranda suites and the four Annex suites upstairs—and their views—are the most desirable. There are three self-catering cottages if you don't want to partake in the fully catered offerings.
