Fodor's Expert Review Cybele Forest Lodge and Spa

Off R40, between Hazyview and White River, near the Phabeni Gate into the Kruger National Park, Hazyview, Mpumalanga, South Africa

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Indulge all your senses at this truly tranquil hideaway nestled in the subtropical splendor of the surrounding forests and overlooking the rolling hills of the lowveld. A wide range of indigenous flowering trees surround the lodge's gardens and create secluded spaces for the 12 luxury suites and cottages, many of which have their own heated swimming pool and outdoor shower. Keep an eye on the mischievous monkeys swinging from the trees that overlook the deep verandas. The cuisine at this romantic retreat is regarded as some of the best in South Africa, and features organic free-range produce served in five-course dinners, generous breakfasts, and à la carte lunches. A typical five-course dinner (R195, reservations essential) could include Swiss cheese crepes, followed by panfried Atlantic salmon in hollandaise sauce, and fig pâté and passion-fruit brûlée tart for dessert. Activities include forest walks, horseback riding, a well-equipped gym, and a wide range of spa treatments.
