Breakers Resort

$$ | 88 Lagoon Dr., Umhlanga, 4319, South Africa

This property enjoys an enviable position at the northern tip of Umhlanga, surrounded by the wilds of the Hawaan Forest and overlooking the unspoiled wetlands of Umhlanga Lagoon. Of all the resorts in Umhlanga, this one suffers the least from crowds. The disadvantage though is that you probably need a car to get into town, and you can't swim directly in front of the resort because the surf's too dangerous. The building is unattractive, with long, depressing corridors, but the rooms themselves are fine, with fully equipped kitchens and great views of the beach and lagoon. The lovely grassed pool area, where you can order breakfast, lunch, and supper from on-site Harry's Beach Club, has a beautiful view of the sea.

Pros

  • Sprawling gardens
  • Great pool
  • Family-friendly

Cons

  • Taxi is required to get to local restaurants, especially at night
  • Overrun with families in-season
  • Furniture is basic

Ghost Mountain Inn

$$ | Fish Eagle Rd., uMkhuze, 3965, South Africa

Swaths of scarlet bougainvillea run riot in the lush gardens of this family-owned country inn with tastefully furnished rooms that each have a small verandah (the newest Mountain Rooms have the best interiors). It was here that Rider Haggard wrote some of his adventure stories, inspired perhaps by the mysterious lights and elusive flickering flames that give the mountain its spooky name. Large, invitingly restful public areas have terra-cotta tiles and comfortable cane furniture. Don't miss the enthusiastic Zulu dancing before a succulent barbecue under the stars. The friendly staff can arrange tours to the neighboring game reserves (Manyoni and uMkhuze are closest), a boat cruise on Lake Jozini, and authentic cultural sights, or will fix you up to go bird-watching or fishing. There's also the opportunity to treat yourself at the swish on-site spa.

Pros

  • Good value for money and generous buffet
  • Strategic location for bush excursions
  • Spa on-site

Cons

  • Can get noisy in peak season
  • Hotel-like atmosphere
  • Tour buses overnight here

Granny Mouse Country House

$$ | R103, Balgowan, 3275, South Africa

One of the best-loved and oldest hotels on the Meander, Granny Mouse has cozy thatch rooms, all slightly different, with a bush view, fireplace, and homey, though upmarket, atmosphere. Freestanding rooms offer more privacy and peace than the newer hotel wing, though the latter have more space. All rooms have a his-and-hers bathroom vanity and a separate bathtub. The main hotel building—formerly an unusual farmhouse with doors and windows from an old church—offers conviviality and warmth in its several lounges. The on-site bistro is locally famous for its lavish breakfasts and afternoon teas. Upstairs, the fine dining restaurant is known for its gorgeous plating in an intimate room. Some of the best places on the Meander are within easy reach.

Pros

  • Lovely setting in rolling green countryside
  • Highly regarded restaurant
  • On-site spa

Cons

  • Popular wedding venue so can be noisy
  • Country feel isn't for everyone
  • Slightly dated interiors

Hilltop Camp

$$ | Hluhluwe, South Africa

Located in the Hluhluwe half of the park, the camp's self-contained chalets have high thatch ceilings, rattan furniture, and small verandahs. Unless you plan to cook, forgo the more expensive chalets with fully equipped kitchens and eat at the restaurant. If you're on a tight budget, opt for a basic rondavel with two beds, a basin, and a refrigerator; toilet facilities are communal. Chalets with best views are No. 40 upward. A restaurant, pub, convenience store, and a gas station are on-site.

Pros

  • Floodlit waterhole
  • Warm, friendly staff
  • Incredible views

Cons

  • Watch out for marauding monkeys
  • Outdoor grill area not covered and is dimly lit at night
  • Bathrooms can smell a little moldy

$$ | 140 Murchison St., Ladysmith, 3370, South Africa

This historic South African country hotel shares much of Ladysmith's tumultuous past—it was built in 1880, just 19 years before the town was attacked by the Boers during the South Africa (Anglo-Boer) War. Expect small rooms, although TVs and air-conditioning are standard features. The hotel serves a buffet for lunch and dinner and offers an à la carte menu on weekends.

$$ | Lower South Coast Main Rd., San Lameer, 4277, South Africa

The vacation rental properties in this exclusive resort between Ramsgate and Palm Beach offer a great getaway for a group of friends or a family, and golfers are drawn by the on-site championship course. Spacious one- to five-bedroom Tuscan-style villas, many with breathtaking views of the sea or the bird-filled lagoons, are set among gardens and tropical indigenous forest. At night it's lit by hundreds of twinkling lights. Stroll down paved walkways to the private beach, meander through the woods, and spot small antelope and monkeys. Shakaland

For a more in-depth exploration of Shakaland, stay the night at the 55-room Shakaland. Overnight guests have access to additional cultural events and stay in a quasi-traditional Zulu dwelling. Beehive huts have modern amenities and the property overlooks the Phobane Lake. Rooms are attractive, luxurious, and Africa-inspired, in enormous thatch beehive huts supported by rope-wrapped struts, decorated with African bedspreads, reed matting, and African art. Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani

$$ | 63 Tambo [Snell] Parade, Durban, 4001, South Africa

Overlooking North Beach along the Golden Mile, this combination of two adjacent high-rise hotels is a two-minute drive from the city center and attracts a mix of business, conference, and leisure travelers. Due to the amalgamation, the hotels collectively offer two business centers, three pools, two gyms, and eight restaurants. The Maharani's rooms are in better condition, with a recent refurb, and the contemporary on-site restaurant, Vigour & Verve, does a commendable breakfast and lunch. Though most rooms have views of the ocean, request a room on an upper floor to take advantage of a full sea view. The Elangeni houses one of the few Japanese restaurants in the city, as well as the Lingela buffet-style restaurant. A minimum three-night stay is required during peak season.

Pros

  • Helpful tour and travel desk
  • Sea views
  • Discounted rates on weekends

Cons

  • Not for those who prefer an intimate hotel experience
  • Lacks some character

Suncoast Hotel and Towers

$$ | 20 Battery Beach Rd., Durban, 4001, South Africa

This hotel mostly attracts businesspeople and gamblers, but it's a stone's throw from the beach and has some great sea views. Like the adjacent casino, it's designed in the art-deco style of the 1930s, which is in keeping with some of Durban's architectural heritage. The rooms are rather small, but elegantly minimalist with furnishings in pastel shades. The sea views from the higher floors are spectacular (it's worth the slightly higher price for a sea-facing room). Indian cuisine is a speciality at Jeera and will be a highlight of your stay (book ahead for their unique afternoon tea), and cocktails are de rigueur at Lounge Bar. The 36 suites in the towers are more luxurious than those in the hotel.

Pros

  • Closest hotel to Moses Mabhida Stadium
  • Has a good spa
  • Access to beach

Cons

  • Smallish rooms
  • Like with all Golden Mile hotels, it gets filled with participants during major sporting events
  • Open-plan bathrooms aren't for everyone

Ubizane Zululand Tree Lodge

$$ | 1020 Main Rd., Hluhluwe, 3960, South Africa

About 16 km (10 miles) from Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park, this lodge lies in a forest of fever trees on the 3,700-acre Ubizane Game Reserve and makes a great base from which to explore Hluhluwe, Mkuze, and St. Lucia. Built of thatch and wood, the open-sided lodge sits on stilts overlooking the Mzinene River. Rooms are in separate cottages, also on stilts, along the riverbank. The rooms themselves are small but tastefully decorated. A qualified ranger will take you for a bush walk or a game drive (which is included in your stay) through the small reserve, or a little farther afield for a game drive in nearby Hluhluwe-iMfolozi.

Pros

  • Bird's-eye views over lovely surroundings
  • Friendly staff
  • Mosquito nets on all beds

Cons

  • Crocodiles in pool near dining area are off-putting

Protea Hotel Edward Durban

$$ | 149 Marine Parade, Durban, 4000, South Africa

Built in 1939 in classic colonial style, the Edward is one of Durban's oldest hotels. Although it's been restored almost to its former elegance, it seems to have lost a little of its soul in the process. Nevertheless, service is excellent, and the stylish cut-glass chandeliers, molded ceilings, and subtle art-deco details bring to mind a more refined past. Rooms are tastefully furnished; 10 have balconies overlooking the sea, and the others have bay windows with sea views. The hotel faces beautiful South Beach.

Pros

  • Don't be put off by the facade, the interior is old-world elegance
  • On Golden Mile
  • You can catch a rickshaw right outside hotel
  • 24-hour business center

Cons

  • Recommended restaurants are a taxi trip away
  • Inadvisable to walk in the area after dark

Protea Simunye Zulu Lodge

$$ | R68, Melmoth, 3835, South Africa

If you find Shakaland too commercial, then consider delving into Zulu culture at this small settlement in a remote valley of Zululand, 60 km (37 miles) from Babanango. Simunye's introduction to traditional Zulu culture extends to contemporary Zulu lifestyles, too. Park at Depart Point and access the camp by a very bumpy road on horseback or 4x4—the views are breathtaking. You'll watch Zulu dancing, visit a working kraal, and meet the locals. Rooms, built of stone and thatch, are a mix of Zulu and pioneer cultures, with locally handmade wooden beds and chairs and decorated with Zulu cooking pots and cow-skin rugs. All the rooms have electricity and hot water. The dining room and bar overlook the quietly flowing Mfule River.

Pros

  • Smaller and more intimate than Shakaland

  • Food not great
