Fodor's Expert Review Planet Restaurant
The refurbished fine-dining restaurant at the iconic Mount Nelson Hotel, the Planet occupies one of the most glamorous rooms in the city and serves excellent fare befitting its grand location. With a galaxy of starry lights cascading from the high-domed ceiling and tall bay windows looking onto bucolic rose gardens, this elegant, all-white space rarely fills to capacity, but it's a great choice for an intimate and stylish night out. The chef makes fantastic use of local ingredients in dishes like the springbok loin with samp (a staple African grain), Jerusalem artichoke ragout, and crispy chakalaka (a spicy South African relish), or the Franschhoek smoked-trout parcel with citrus and fennel. Frequently hosting good-value "wine and dine" evenings, and one of the few fine-dining locations serving excellent vegetarian and even vegan tasting menus, the Planet is one of the city's most underrated upscale finds. For a bespoke culinary experience, inquire about the Chef's Table, where the chef will create individual food-and-wine pairing menus for tables of 6 to 10.
