Fodor's Expert Review L'iglesia
Eglise Espagnole, Cite Portuguaise, El Jadida, Casablanca-Settat, Morocco Fodor's Choice
One of Morocco’s most chic hotels is partly built within the walls of the old Spanish church, St. Anthony of Padua, in the heart of the centuries-old Cité Portugaise. Set over two sites (the church and convent, and the former American Consulate), the rooms here are quirky yet comfortable, with original features maintained for a truly ethereal feel. The old bell was taken from the tower (which you can still climb) and installed in the entrance hall, while the altar area has been transformed into a sublime salon where you can sit and drink, read, or just gaze in wonder at what may be the country’s most impressive collection of Art Deco objects.
PROS
- unique interiors
- gorgeous building
- historical setting
CONS
- if you stay in the converted church, breakfast is in a different building
- expensive for the area
- few other restaurant options in the area
