Here’s where to go if you can’t make it to Bora Bora.
Over-the-water bungalows offer the quintessential private romantic getaway: just you and your beloved in your own private sanctuary overlooking the impossibly blue ocean. The only problem? Staying in a bungalow used to mean most of a day’s flight to the South Pacific—Bora Bora, Tahiti, or Fiji—in order to reach that pinnacle of solitude.
But luckily, in recent years, destinations much more easily accessible to the U.S. have gotten into the overwater bungalow game. Now, you can find these accommodations within a two-hour flight of the U.S., or even in the U.S. And you don’t have to scrimp on the exclusive experience, either. There are overwater bungalow accommodations from the highly exclusive private island vacation to more budget-friendly and eco-friendly options in destinations like Mexico, Jamaica, Belize, and throughout the Caribbean.
Thatch Caye
WHERE: Dangriga, Belize
Located just over a two-hour flight from Houston, your trip to Thatch Caye begins with a short boat ride to a private island and a warm greeting by the two resident island dogs, Marley and Pico, along with trays of welcome cocktails and cool towels.
The vibe at Thatch Caye, all-inclusive Muy’Ono Resort, is very laid back and casual, where you’ll happily chat with newfound friends over family-style meals about your adventures scuba diving or snorkeling on the Belize Barrier Reef, the second largest coral reef system in the world. The small island off the mainland can accommodate 30 guests in a variety of accommodations, including premier overwater bungalows which include hammocks and seating on private decks over the Caribbean Sea. Marley and Pico will also join you for stand-up paddleboarding if you like.
INSIDER TIPTry your hand at spear hunting for lobster (if in season). The chefs will grill your catch for you to enjoy with dinner. You can also go snorkeling at night and see animals such as octopuses that are typically too shy for spotting during the day.
Palafitos at El Dorado Maroma
WHERE: Playa del Carmen, Mexico
The word palafitos in Spanish translates to “stilt houses”—otherwise known as overwater bungalows.
El Dorado Maroma was the first property to introduce these coveted accommodations to the Yucatán Peninsula back in 2016. Located at this adults-only all-inclusive resort, each palafito gives you a stunning view of the turquoise waters of Mexico’s Caribbean coast, with glass floor panels over the ocean, a private plunge pool, and an outdoor shower. Enjoy authentic Yucatecan cuisine, an overwater spa, and deep relaxation, all within a three-hour flight from New York.
INSIDER TIPBook one of the Mayan-inspired treatments at the spa. Options include treatments inspired by the local cenotes and Mayan music, as well as a bee healing ritual. You can also book a temezcal ceremony in a traditional sweat lodge, or a cacao ceremony.
