In the current environment around the world, re-use, re-purpose and re-new is trending.
Finding a good bargain is part of my personal make-up. Some may call it shopping, but I like to think of it as the art of acquiring sustainably. It is the opportunity to shop where locals shop, buy local goods (a bit used), and to pump money back into the local economy or support a charitable cause. Think of the joy of returning from a trip with a pair of worn-in cowboy boots from Montana that you found in the local hospice thrift store. You have a story, a cause, and a cool pair of boots previously owned by a cowboy (maybe).
I try to thrift wherever I am and always check at least one half-empty bag. If necessary, I even buy another bag to haul my finds home, like the dirty but sturdy Herschel-brand suitcase I bought in Banff for $5 Canadian. Read on for my definitive list of the best thrift stores across the USA.
Top Picks for You
Goodwill Boutique Stores
WHERE: Portland, Oregon
Thrifting may just be the norm in this Northwest Center of Hip. In Portland, I discovered my first Goodwill Boutique Store, an experience like thrifting on luxury steroids. The selection is amazing, items are beautifully displayed, and service is more at the level of a boutique than a store made for rummaging through indistinct racks. This is one of those thrift stores you brag about discovering.
INSIDER TIPWhen the Travel Portland website has a detailed vintage/thrifting webpage it is clear that thrifting here is taken seriously. I have seen both high-end and low-end and love them all.
ReThreads
WHERE: Tucson, Arizona
A friend who works in tourism says a third of her clothes are from this charitable store. An off-shoot of the popular thrift chain Buffalo Exchange, ReThreads is not-for-profit and falls under the Coyote Task Force, which provides retail jobs to adults in recovery from mental health issues. Clothes are clean, organized, and represent the quality donations a shop receives when the community truly supports its mission. I am always happy to find quality cast-offs from those who can afford the best. Look for classic western items, including cowboy boots, hats, and even turquoise–all incredible souvenirs.
INSIDER TIPAfter shopping, hit Cafe54 for lunch, another Coyote Task Force project supporting mental health.

Vintage Values Resale Shops
WHERE: Wilmington, North Carolina
Shop film locations and pick up props for a bit of Hollywood flair. The Vintage Values Resale Shops have three locations throughout the Wilmington area, including one in the eccentric and lively Castle Street District. All proceeds from the stores go to support Domestic Violence Shelter and Services, The stores are loaded with clothes, shoes, and accessories, and flash sales are common. You’ll also find seasonal stuff, clothes worn in films made in Wilmington, and a lot of glass and decorative items.
INSIDER TIPUsed books can be the bargain of the thrifting world and this vintage store is at the top of the heap. Old Books on Front is a family-owned used book shop located in downtown Wilmington, at 249 N. Front Street has appeared as a location in several locally filmed TV shows and movies, and the shop has provided books as props for numerous locally made films.
Ladies Village Improvement Society
WHERE: Easthampton, New York
The Easthampton Ladies Village Improvement Society, or ELVIS, as it’s known, is housed in a stunning mansion at the entrance to Easthampton’s small downtown area. ELVIS is an annual pilgrimage for me; that’s how good the deals are. As you can imagine, the wealthy of The Hamptons have no problem shedding frocks, furniture, and functional items as they go out of style, a luxury home is downsized, or they simply realize they have too much junk.
The ELVIS mansion contains a series of beautifully organized rooms. I have bought everything from linens to dresses to jeans here, and others I drag to ELVIS leave with plates, books, shoes, and menswear.
INSIDER TIPGet to know the staff there. They are all volunteers and are as excited to find bargains as visiting customers are. I always fly to New York with a half-empty bag and allow the ELVIS volunteers to revamp my wardrobe, put new cloth napkins on my table, or find me a new dramatic serving platter.
Orphaned Objects Designer Resale
WHERE: Fairbanks Ranch, California
Helen Woodward Animal Center has a thrift shop at its center of operations where “orphaned” items support the similarly forgotten rescue dogs. The Orphaned Objects Designer Resale is one of a kind in my thrifting experiences. Fairbanks Ranch is the poshest neighborhood in already upscale Northern San Diego County, and finding this sprawling dog compound is a true surprise. Uniquely, you see the work that the thrift funds – there is a dog boarding and training facility, and just about anything you can imagine would help rescue dogs (and their owners) thrive.
The thrift is no less than spectacular and is notable for its dramatic display of outdoor furniture as soon as you walk up. Inside, find gorgeous clothing and accessories, furniture, and art and design. Visit often and make sure there’s room in your trunk. Again, cast-offs of the wealthy at a fraction of the original price are my kind of finds.
INSIDER TIPThere is a good selection of dog clothes and accessories in their own little room.
Goodwill North Florida
WHERE: St. Augustine, Florida
A donation from MacKenzie Scott (former wife of Jeff Bezos) kickstarted Goodwill’s growth. David Rey, president of Goodwill North Florida, notes that Ms. Scott gave $4.2 billion to 384 organizations. “We were one of those,” says Rey. “We decided to invest in our real estate position so we could expand our donated goods business and employ more people. That goes directly toward our mission. “I think the thrifting movement in the last decades has really taken hold,” Rey noted. “Recycling and reusing. We’re becoming more cognizant and aware of our carbon footprint and what we’re doing to the earth.”
In St. Augustine, the new Goodwill, is impressive – double the size of the previous store. The selections are extensive and well-organized, and Goodwill’s incentive to move items to make way for constant new arrivals means great sales and turnover.
INSIDER TIPCheck out Goodwill stores throughout Florida that benefited from the Scott grant. Updated and fresh stock makes the shopping experience easier, while greater public awareness means great donations!
Revivals Thrift Stores
WHERE: Palm Springs Area, California
Design and fashion rule in this vibrant seasonal destination. It just makes sense that Palm Springs, a destination that’s a third Hollywood, a third mid-century design, and a third Gay mecca, would have great thrifting opportunities.
DAP Healthy Revivals Thrift Stores gives 100% of its profits–over $1 million per year to its charitable organizations, and has locations in Palm Desert, Cathedral City, and Palm Springs. Its motto, “Re-Love the Pre-Loved” rings true for an organization that supports over 100,000 individuals who rely of DAP health care.
INSIDER TIPVintage and curated consignment is big in the Palm Springs area, and these are wonderful places to search for mid-century and modern finds – both real or knock-offs.
The Place in Indio is a hub for over 100 small businesses specializing in design.
Goodwill Stores
WHERE: Honolulu, Hawaii
The best thrifting in Honolulu is probably Goodwill. On the island of Oahu alone, there are six Goodwill stores around the island. The population here is transient (between members of the military and affluent mainlanders with their second (or third) homes), meaning business is brisk and donations plentiful.
I needed some beach pants and sand shoes…check! Rice cooker and deco tiki trinkets…easy! Harder to find are the elusive Aloha shirts, famous as a symbol of relaxed island life. When I asked the volunteer about Aloha shirts, she gave me that laugh that meant “you and everyone else,” then turned me on to the organization’s major fundraiser, Goodwill Goes Glam, which was just two days away. With no idea what I was getting into, I bought two $35 tickets, which included a buffet dinner and a fashion show, followed by access to a football-sized field of curated thrift items. The shopping was so good (think vintage Aloha shirts for $15) that my boyfriend warned me against writing this and increasing the competition. Goodwill Goes Glam is now on our calendar every August.
INSIDER TIPAlways check the board when walking into Goodwill Stores and it will tell you what color tags are heavily discounted that day. You might even get additional deals on stock that’s been around a while.
The Assistance League
WHERE: Denver, Colorado
Get Rocky Mountain High Thrifting in the Mile High City. Among the popular thrift stores in Denver is The Assistance League, a volunteer-supported store that assists charitable and developmental activities throughout the metropolitan Denver area.
Known as the friendliest thrift shop in town, volunteers keep the store stocked, clean, and organized, and the items are amazingly cheap! The store has an extensive handbag selection (many designer brands) and high-end clothing. The Assistance League specializes in men’s and women’s clothing and shoes, books, housewares, and antiques, and, unlike many thrift stores that have increased prices, it stays bargain-hunter friendly. Rarely do I think twice about a purchase.
INSIDER TIPRe-using items is good for the earth, no matter what form it takes. Garage Sale Vintage is one of the most unique re-use shops that I have found in my travels. With a bar, vinyl spinning, and a nostalgic vibe, vendors come from across the U.S. to sell their items.
