Steve Lyons

Steve is an award-winning journalist who spent 33 years working at the Winnipeg Free Press. In December of 2021, he retired from his position as Sports Editor at the Free Press, and now provides content to a variety of North American publications, including the Toronto Star, BBC, AFAR, Vancouver Sun, SPIN, Winnipeg Free Press, Seattle Times, Denver Post, We Explore Canada and the West Australian. As a sportswriter, Steve reported on the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets, the CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Pan Am Games and just about every other professional and amateur sport. In 1995, he won a national award for a series he did on the lack of gender equity in sports. Steve’s travel stories have chronicled hikes such as Bethlehem to Jericho through historic Wadi Qelt; a great cup of tea on a mountaintop in Jordan’s Wadi Rum; and a personal quest to get to the summit of Sulphur Mountain in Banff National Park. He’s written about great retirement bike rides in New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California, Oregon, British Columbia and Alberta. And recently, he’s written a fair bit about his Indigenous Tourism experiences in Canada. Whether on two wheels or two feet, Steve’s stories are targeted to active travelers who are looking for adventure, great food and cultural experiences. He is a proud long-time resident of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
