Kit Bernardi

During Kit's 25 years as a freelance journalist and photographer, she’s traveled to 59 countries and six continents. Kit covers culture, culinary, luxury, garden, cruise, architecture, RV, and adventure travel. Her stories and photography appear regularly in USA TODAY, USA TODAY Go Escape, Veterans Affairs, and the South China Morning Post. Kit road trips across America in her RV gathering stories. Looking back in life’s rear-view mirror, Kit likely took her first steps on her career path as a first grader in a snow storm. When she missed the school bus, she carved her way home through snowbanks. Kit’s first taste of solo travel was catching tingly, chunky snowflakes on her tongue. She's hungered for travel ever since. Kit has worked as an international student travel director while living in Lugano, Switzerland; television and radio show host, producer, and news announcer in Midwest cities; public relations director for Hilton Hotels Corporation’s Midwest region; and United Airlines account director for an international marketing agency. She left corporate life to backpack six months around the world with her husband. Their global trek launched Kit’s freelance travel writing career. Kit is a former contributing editor for Meredith Corporation’s Midwest Living, a Lowell Thomas Award winning magazine. Her freelance articles have been published in U.S. News & World Report, SmarterTravel.com, Delta Sky, Hemispheres, CNN Travel, Rachel Ray In Season, Reveal, and more outlets world-wide. She authored sections of the Harley-Davidson Ride Atlas of North America and the first Not For Tourists Chicago guidebook. Kit’s work has received numerous publishing industry accolades from the Society of American Travel Writers, Midwest Travel Journalists Association, National Women’s Press Association, and U.S. Travel Association. Kit is a graduate of Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame and has a Masters in Writing from DePaul University, Chicago. When not on assignment in another continent or RVing around America, Kit lives between Chicago and a historic beachfront community on Lake Michigan in the Indiana Dunes National Park.
