John Oseid

John earned his travel chops early on. He has no memory, of course, of his first year in Thessaloniki, Greece, where his father had a Fulbright Scholarship. But growing up in a SoCal home full of Greek art and artifacts surely piqued his cultural curiosity for the world. His nascent travel bug developed further as a kid with the unique opportunity of flying to Asia several times space available on military aircraft, as did making a huge loop en famille around the United States and Canada one summer in a trailer. As a high school exchange student on an Austrian vineyard, he learned German via the Gewürztraminer method, followed by French in swanky Aix-en-Provence. He also fit in a (very cold) year teaching English in Manchuria before heading to graduate school at Columbia’s School of International Affairs. Over more than a dozen years at Conde Nast Traveler, John worked as a research editor and staff writer, including writing the magazine’s popular Room with a View page and the Where Are You? contest essay. As a freelance writer, he has blogged of late for Forbes and enjoys a gig of translating travel and lifestyle articles from German, French and Spanish into English.
