Johanna Read

Johanna Read is a Canadian freelance writer/photographer specializing in responsible tourism. Her bylines include National Geographic, TIME, Travel + Leisure, Forbes, Lonely Planet, and Fodor's. Johanna encourages travel that's as stress-free as possible—for both travelers and residents of the places we visit—and that's culturally, economically, and environmentally sustainable. She’s especially keen to raise awareness about safer travel given the surge of infectious diseases. In doing this, Johanna draws on her management consultant work creating physically and psychologically healthy workplaces and her previous policy executive positons with the Government of Canada. Johanna began travel writing professionally in 2013 and, pre-pandemic, often traveled solo for months at a time. She’s lived in several Canadian cities and is currently based in Vancouver.
