From the Britannia looking at our cruise ship
From the Britannia looking at our cruise ship

The next day we toured the Britannia, QEII’s favorite ship now out of commission since 1997 due to the exorbitant costs borne by the taxpayers. Well I guess!!!! Super over the top luxurious. Must admit I don’t get the English fascination and approval of the Royal Family. Photo taken from my balcony on the ship.

Two Saturday night’s ago, I was not a loser! My BF from college was on the cruise and he insisted on going to a pub after dinner when everyone else was hitting the hay. He and I backpacked through Europe for 10 weeks in the summer of 1979 and visited Edinburgh. We had to sprint one night to our hostel as we’d lost track of the time and doors shut firmly at 11 PM. Anyway I couldn’t let him go alone so off we went to relive the good old days!!!!

Calton Hill in Edinburgh. This is the unfinished National Monument of Scotland. Initiated in 1816, a year after Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, the monument was meant to be a replica of the Parthenon in Athens, as a memorial to those who had died in the Napoleonic Wars.

Building began in 1822, but funds ran dry by 1829, and only a facade of the building was completed. It was dubbed "Edinburgh's shame", but it's now a popular landmark and it's a lot of fun crawling up and down its giant steps.

First stop was at this amazing place. The Vikings and all the others before and after them who set up shop here had to be incredibly tough.
