This is the fig leaf that was applied to the plaster cast of the statue of David by Michelangelo. This was necessary because in Victorian times, the ladies had a hard time looking at David in the eye! Hey eyes up here! This is very funny, I mean Victoria had 9 children so at least someone knew what was behind the fig leaf

Since the V & A doesn't have access to many famous statues, they just made their own out of plaster. They actually call it the Plaster Court.

Farmers are having a tough time in what was once one of the largest "bread baskets" in the country. No water. We live in a state with a constant drought. These are dead trees.

When I was a 19 year old kid from Michigan I came to California to serve in the Air Navy. California, my dream. Only to be dropped into the largest agriculture area in the state. No Beach Boys, no beach, no blondes, no bikinis! Only the local Portuguese farmers...with some pretty daughters.

Coming down the Grapevine. Most people think the Grapevine is from Santa Clarita down to the San Joaquin Valley but it's actually about a 7 mile stretch, from Ft. Tejon to the bottom. It used to be covered in "grapevines"

As I said, the San Joaquin Valley was and is huge agriculture area, we passed at least 20 of these trucks, taking Roma tomatoes to be processed. Water is really a problem here.

Next store to Lim's was the Olde West pawn store. Big on guns, or so the sign says.

However, given the amount of water that it takes to grow one almond, some are turning to other products. This looks like some agave plants? Maybe someone is trading almonds for tequila?

Not a lot to say about Redding, it was a quick stopover, but this sign for a now closed cafe really caught my eye. We are staying on N. Market St. which was once the main road before the highway was built.

Only stayed in Redding for a quick stopover but had to add in this picture of Lim's Cafe, been here since the 50's. We are on N. Market St. which used to be the main road before I-5.

Today, there is no water and agriculture is no longer one of our big products. Apples still are, but it's Apple computers and phones.

So if there is no water, maybe someone switches from nuts to agave? First time I've seen these plants on the trip but maybe a switch from almonds to tequila?

As I said, the San Joaquin Valley is one of the largest agricultural areas in California. We must have passed at least 20 of these trucks taking Roma tomatoes to be processed. But...we have no water and agriculture doesn't represent the percentage of the economy it once did. We have plenty of Apples, but those are Apple computers and phones.

We didn't spend much time in Redding, Ca. A quick stopover on the way North. Redding is where the land starts to get interesting. Lim's Cafe, been here since the 50's, closed now.
