Wherever you go, don't try to be clever with the ring. A friend had the ring put into the creme brulee by a restaurant. She swallowed it. True story!!!!

nan Nov 14th, 2002 06:23 PM

Now that you have us all wrapped up in this proposal - could you please post after she says "yes"? It will be a nice way to start the new year! By the way - Silverado Golf Resort in Napa is beautiful - I spent my honeymoon there.

Dan Nov 14th, 2002 06:38 PM

A trip to Napa can drain your funds quickly. We stayed at the Wine Country Inn and it was very nice. During certain times you can get rooms for under $200. The area is pretty pricey. Good luck to you. However it's you romantic types that get the rest of us knuckle draggers in trouble.

Check it out
http://www.winecountryinn.com/

Susan Nov 14th, 2002 06:46 PM

Hey Nancy! My husband proposed to me in St. Martin too. On the balcony of La Vie en Rose in Marigot. I'll never forget it. To Me: Napa sounds lovely.

yyy Nov 14th, 2002 07:40 PM

To xxx: If your friend had bought a decent size ring, his fiancee wouldn't have been able to swallow it so easily.

Nancy Nov 15th, 2002 10:28 AM

To Susan, We ate there.........very romantic. He proposed to me on the balcony at Le Domaine where we were staying. St. Martin sometimes gets a bad rap these days, but it will forever be special in my heart as I am sure yours too, and I would go back there in a heartbeat!

Nancy Nov 15th, 2002 10:30 AM

To Me: I read on Fodors's that there is a restaurant in Napa Valley called French Laundry that is supposed to be one of the best restaurants in the country for food and romance. It's in Yountville,CA. Not sure if that's near where you are going, but if it is you may want to check it out! Enjoy!

Renae Nov 15th, 2002 11:21 AM

We came upon a couple while we were walking the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. They were out biking and they "stopped to rest". He was on one knee and she was crying. It will be a wonderful memory for them and I will never forget it.

xxx Nov 15th, 2002 11:25 AM

Maybe not, Renae. Are you so sure why she was crying? Maybe he was on one knee because she kicked him.

nan Nov 15th, 2002 11:29 AM

One other quick thought. There are two lovely restaurants in Sausalito (between Napa and SF). Once is Scomas and the other is the Spinnaker. Both romantic - from what I remembered!

xxx Nov 15th, 2002 11:36 AM

Napa Valley is a great idea. Bermuda, The Reefs is a beautiful place or look up "Little Palm Island" in Florida. Very very romantic.

I was propsed to at the National Cathedral in Wash. DC in one of the little chapel rooms and noone was around. It was New Years Day. I'll never forget it. Our wedding day was also special. We decided to get married on a beach in St. John and honeymooned there. Wonderful memories of both occasions.

madge Nov 15th, 2002 11:48 AM

Er, guys, you can stop now. The original poster, Me, is now posting on another thread that he's going to pop the question in Napa Valley and wants info on that area. So it looks like he already made up his mind. Too bad he couldn't take the time to come back to this thread and let everyone know.

Pay Attention Nov 15th, 2002 11:56 AM

Madge, loose the 'tude hon, the original poster did, in fact, post above that he bought airline tix to CA. Keep up will ya? or at least keep the sarcasm to yourself if you have not actually READ thru the posts.

thanks much.

Laura Nov 15th, 2002 01:56 PM

Congratulations, "Me Again!" One WONDERFUL place in the wine country is S. Andersen, a maker of fine champagnes that have been served at the White House. They built a magnificent cave with cathedral ceilings to store their champagne, and when we were there in broad daylight, the cave was dark with dozens of lit candleabras and gorgeous fresh flowers. Very romantic! Perhaps you can talk them into emptying their cave (the word "cave" definitely does not do it justice) of visitors so you can propose or enjoy a congratulatory toast alone. Best wishes!

amy Nov 15th, 2002 02:26 PM

Mr. Popping... you dont sound very sure of yourself about getting married!! You said..."she has been pushing you after 4 yrs....?? That takes the romance away,, sounds one sided!! Love is blind.. Marriage is an eyeopener!!! Good Luck!! Try NYC empire state bdg....at the top!!!

Aurora Nov 15th, 2002 02:33 PM

My husband asked me while we were hiking in the middle of a river in one of the National Parks in Utah. It was BEAUTIFUL and springtime...

try to find a unique place - not in a restaurant - if you go to San Fran - go to the North shore of the bay and look back at the city lights at sunset - that is a beautiful and memorable view!

Noproblem Nov 15th, 2002 02:46 PM

My husband proposed to me in front of a 40 Foot waterfall at a restaurant in Ocho Rios Jamacia called The Ruins. You drive through...(near) what seems a ghetto to get there, and once behind the wall...It is a beautiful restaurant with a stream running through it! We were seated near the waterfall...and there is a little platform you walk out to and your waiter takes your picture. We went out there, and "he" got on his knee and totally surprised me!!! He had the ring in his luggage for 4 days and I had no clue!!!!! It was beautiful. You'll have to re-post how you actually do it!!!! Good luck!!

Hi,
Thanks once again to all the helpful posters out there. I appreciate all your advice, support and best wishes.

The plans are shaping up. As I posted yesterday, plane tickets are set. Today, I managed to book our lodging--we're staying in Yountville for 2 nts. The people at the Yountville Inn have been GREAT so far. No luck getting a reservation at French Laundry, but did get thru and explained my situation and they'll see what opens up...I considered booking us at a boutique hotel in SF but decided to use Marriott rewards and be practical. Has anyone been to the Renaissance Stamford Court?

All I have left is to reserve a car (using miles for that too) and decide which wineries to visit. How's Joseph Phelps? Has anyone gone there? Opus??

I'm going to copy this email and post it on the other thread that I started. I didn't want to slight anyone which some of you seem to think I have.

Thanks again,
Me

Me again Nov 15th, 2002 04:07 PM

Laura--
Thanks for the S. Anderson tip! If I can arrange to go there, I'll owe you BIG time. Sounds perfect!

Will keep you posted
Ashleigh Nov 15th, 2002 04:46 PM

So did you decide on SF? Good luck! Where ever you decide to pop the question, I'm sure it will be romantic!

Just Engaged Nov 16th, 2002 09:50 AM

Congrats. What a creative guy!My fiance did something similar 3 months ago. We went to Vail the weekend after Labor Day, hiked, biked and just relaxed. I got a little suspicious but as day 2 of 5 came and went I stopped thinking about it and decided to just have fun. He ended up proposing at the base of the mountain on day 4. He knew I'd be so anxious to tell my family and friends that he didn't want to do it at the beginning of the trip but he also wanted to have some time alone to celebrate. It was magical!

I am sure however you do it- at a romantic restaurant or just walking down the street will be just as magical to the two of you.

One word of advice- in order not to get caught in airport security, my fiance darted to another line and said, "let's race" to me. I didn't suspect a thing. He didn't end up getting searched but if he did, I wouldn't have noticed. :)

Me again Nov 18th, 2002 03:56 PM

Just engaged--Congrats to you and thanks for getting me uptight about airport security ;-) I hadn't even thought about that yet. It should be ok in my carry-on, right? Everyone's advice seems to be to ask early in the trip but I know my g/f will want to call every living person on the face of the earth. I figure I'll go hit golf balls all day while she runs up our cell phone bill (just kidding!)

To the rest of you incredibly helpful posters, I just want to say thanks!

Everything's in place. Will circle back after the New Year...
Hello all,
I promised to get back with you and let you know that all turned out PERFECTLY.

Flights pretty much on time, hotel reservations as planned, we managed to have lunch at French Laundry and I proposed later that afternoon--it was just a great moment. Quiet, private and special. (And of course my girlfriend--oops finacee-- said yes!!)

The people at Yountville Inn couldn't have been nicer and more accomodating. They took care of reservations and helped us get into some private wineries while keeping everything a secret from my girlfriend.

It was a fantastic week. Thanks to all who provided suggestions. We'll be posting on the Europe board in the next few months--hoping to spend our honeymoon in Italy next July.

Jon

maria Jan 6th, 2003 10:09 AM

Jon,

Congratulations!!! Have fun in the Europe board. Italy is a perfect destination for a honeymoon. Make sure your get to the Amalfi coast. Lots of great hotels for a honeymoon there. Have fun researching!

b Jan 6th, 2003 11:38 AM

remember to cater to her wishes the entire day. I popped the question at a remote beach on Cape Cod, after the perfect beach day and the two of us alone all day. But, the entire day has to have a feeling of romance, so when the alarm clock went off early that morning, I woke her up gently (she doesn't like to be rushed), took her out to brunch, asked her what she wanted for the drive to the beach, and then set up a nice dinner in Boston.

I'm usually much more of the "come on, let's go let's go" which gets on her nerves. Even if the sun is going down, and you're going to miss the sunset, and she's putting on a last minute makeup, don't rush her. Make everything seem very accomodating for her and she'll remember the entire day for not only where she was, but she'll remember the "Feel" of the day.

xxx Jan 6th, 2003 12:23 PM

Congratulations on the big announcement. She sounds like a very lucky lady to have found you. You're going to love Italy for the honeymoon!

sue Jan 6th, 2003 12:57 PM

I'm very happy for you - and very glad you let the rest of us know how it turned out! During the wet, cold days of early winter it was fun to read all your planning. Enjoy Italy!

scarlett Jan 6th, 2003 01:32 PM
