There are NO stupid questions.

Be helpful of move along.

x Feb 28th, 2002 05:59 PM

I agree. As my mother used to say, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say nothing at all."

jjjj Feb 28th, 2002 06:00 PM

Au contraire....there are a LOT of stupid questions posted here.<BR>They're known as troll posts.<BR>People just trying to stir other people's anger without seeking any real info. (Almost like this post).

spoungebob Feb 28th, 2002 06:04 PM

OK THEN READ THE MY RESPONSE 2 POSTS UP AND PLEASE ANSWER

tracy Feb 28th, 2002 06:08 PM

There are so many rude, mean spirited people on this forum. For the life of me, I don't understand why people get aggravated with the type of questions that are asked. They act like they are being forced to read or reply. If you don't like the question, move on or stay off the site! Is this how these cowards vent by picking on people who are just asking for friendly replies to honest questions? If the questions are dumb, so what. It doesn't cost anything and no one needs a smart remark. I have seen many rude replies and it just reminds me of a bunch of cowardly people who love to me mean as long as they are anonymous. To the generous people who do their best to help others, I am grateful and there are many of them. The rest act like a bunch of third graders. I can't imagine why they spend time on a travel site just to be rude. be nice or be gone!

Carmella Feb 28th, 2002 06:14 PM

Tracy, I totally agree!

yyy Feb 28th, 2002 06:17 PM

There may be no stupid question, but we can sure find a lot of stupid answers. I totally agree with tracy.

totally Feb 28th, 2002 07:09 PM

I totally agree with me.

duh Feb 28th, 2002 07:10 PM

totally ,dude.

stupid Feb 28th, 2002 07:12 PM

There are no stupid questions, only stupid people

iagree Feb 28th, 2002 07:52 PM

Dear x. <BR><BR>"If you can't say something nice, don't say nuthin at all." ---or words to that effect.<BR><BR>The first public disclosure of this very wise adage is generally attributed to Thumper (the rabbit), in the movie, Bambi. If you will recall, he was making fun of new-born, wobbly-legged, Bambi, and his mother scolded him, asking, "Thumper, what did your father tell you?" Hanging his head in shame, Thumper repeated the words above, or something similar. Your mother probably heard it first from Thumper.<BR>See how valuable this board is? One can learn a whole lotta stuff here.

GP Feb 28th, 2002 08:57 PM

I Agree. There are no stupid questions.<BR>My guess is that all of us at one time were 1st time travelers. We found our way by observing and asking questions. <BR>I know I asked a few stupid ones and still do.<BR>But there is always room for fun!<BR>Do not forget why we are here. <BR>Hopefully to share, learn, and laugh.<BR>I for one will try.<BR><BR>GP

oh yeah Feb 28th, 2002 09:32 PM

You are right there are no stupid questions, just stupid, lazy posters. If you look over most of the negative comments on this forum you will see that they are directed towards people who do not bother to do homework, can not look up previous posts or ask questions of total strangers that make no sense whatsoever. These posters can find their way to this forum, but they can't figure out the weather in an area, the mileage to someplace etc. When I was in school the teachers always took the time to answer our questions, EXCEPT when we were lazy and used the teacher to get an answer instead of getting the information ourselves. I do wonder how some of these posters got through school -- or perhaps they didn't!!<BR><BR>I will help anyone with any information that I have when they have tried to figure it out themselves. But, if they insist on being lazy and not trying, then I am going to call them on it. Only by doing this, perhaps they will learn to think and act on their own. And, if they can't act and think on their own, then I do not think they are ready to travel on their own.

Alisa Feb 28th, 2002 11:15 PM

The posting about stupid questions is ridiculous. Please Fodors--delete it!!<BR><BR>If everyone who answered that post would start their own nasty website, Fodors TT would be a nicer place to visit for everyone.

Showucan Mar 1st, 2002 03:09 AM

Ohyeah has got it nailed.<BR><BR>A lot of the questions posted here could be best handled by going to www.google.com and searching on the question. And restaurant recommendations by going to www.chowhound.com. And if you're looking for lodging, going to www.biddingfortravel.com and learning how to use www.priceline.com.<BR><BR>In most of those cases, you'll get better information, and more of it, and with less bias.<BR><BR>If it's an area that has little WWW info available, that's one thing. Or if you're trying to get views about one 4-star hotel versus another in San Francisco, this is a great place to ask. But "Where should I stay in San Francisco?" is really out-of-bounds. You should probably stay home.

vic's sister Mar 1st, 2002 04:12 AM

Vic is a troll. I seldom see him post here. He is all over the airline site. Vic is short for vicious ,because he certainly is.

nina Mar 1st, 2002 04:48 AM

I agree, there are no stupid questions. It's a lot easier and faster to get answers here, so why not? Fodors is a resource, and the smart people realize this and use it as such. <BR><BR>If you think a question is too stupid for you to answer than don't. Perhaps someone will consider your questions equally as moronic and not bother helping you. There is a difference between being lazy and resourceful, and if you were the latter you'd realize this.

I Agree Mar 1st, 2002 06:42 AM

Another voice in agreement with Oh Yeah.<BR><BR>For Nina above, asking how far it is from Miami to Key West on Fodor's, and then having to wait until someone replies, is most certainly NOT faster than using the search engine to find this topic on this discussion list, or even going to a mapper website.<BR><BR>I can't understand how you would think that asking a routine question on Fodor's, and then waiting hours or even days for an answer, is more "resourceful" than taking five minutes to find the answer youself off the web.<BR><BR>This board is great, because I can exhange information with fellow travelers that is NOT easily found on the web or through any other information source.<BR><BR>And please, enough of the philosophy of "if you don't like it don't read it". Don't you people realize that many readers only take the time to skim through the "top 50", so everytime a person asks an easily self-answerable question, someboby with a question that is not so easily researched gets knocked down into oblivion. This insipid thread (including my contribution) is doing the same thing, but at least perhaps this thread might prompt some people to do some homework before posting here.<BR><BR>Come on people, we're only asking you to spend about 20 minutes searching this site and the web before you ask your question. You'll wait much longer than that for replies.

ORnotOF Mar 1st, 2002 06:45 AM

Be Helpful:<BR><BR>That's "Be helpful OR move along." not "OF move along". Now that's stupid.

nina Mar 1st, 2002 07:03 AM

I agree, let me tell you how it is easier. Let's say that I am in fact too lame (or lazy) to figure out the distance to Miami. I assume when people ask this question they are looking for more than miles. They probably would also like to know how long it will take. Looking at Mapquest, with it's completely inaccurate travel times, will not give you a good idea of travel time, traffic, etc,.I would much rather get this info from someone who actually has driven the route, and what to expect traffic wise, etc. I have yet to see a question that was literally "How many miles from Point A to Point B." I dare anyone to find a post with that simplistic of a question on this board. Normally someone will ask "How far is it from Point A to Point B, and what is the best route, or how long will it take, or are there any stops along the way, etc." I may be wrong, but that is NOT a stupid question.<BR><BR>I'll give you another scenerio. Say I'm at work as I assume many posters here are. I can quickly type in a question and come back tomorrow for the answer. Maybe you don't need the info that minute. Still it's less time actually spent running search engines and browsing websites, especially if Big Brother is watching. <BR><BR>Also don't assume that everyone is internet savvy. My mom can get to this website but hasn't quite mastered search engines. If she wants to come here to get her information should she be penalized because she didn't do the "work" for her answer. I don't think so.<BR><BR>It personally doesn't bother me if someone asks a "dumb" question. If it did, I would just ignore it.

dumnohyeah Mar 1st, 2002 07:09 AM

Oh Yeah - I feel sorry for your family having such an almighty member like you.

FedUp Mar 1st, 2002 07:29 AM

Oh Yeah-Did you ever think that people who post here don't have a whole lot of time to be researching desinations??? Maybe they have jobs, families, do volunteer work, go to Church and have lives instead of posting here all day?? <BR><BR>What is the old saying? Don't criticize someone unless you walk a mile in their shoes.....

tootrue Mar 1st, 2002 07:39 AM

Hey people - who cares about right, wrong, stupid, vicious, etc. It's a lot more fun and interesting to read the posts that get folks riled one way or another and that's why they're there.

Curious Mar 1st, 2002 07:41 AM

Agree that many of the questions posed, i.e. milage, location, etc. can and should be eaily looked up. But I fail to see what is wrong with asking for personal lodging or restaurant recommondations, actual travel times, etc., info that can only be had thru those who are familiar with an area.

Gee, my email Mar 1st, 2002 09:17 AM

Complaining about "mean" or inappropriate postings on this forum is like complaining about noise at the Superbowl. Wake up people, fodors does not require a real email address, there is no screening process at all for users -- if you want legitimate postings, use another website. yes, Fodor's should get their act together --but until they do, this will be a haven for grade-school antics. Frankly, I don't depend on this forum for ANY useful info; I just stop by when I need a laugh, because I find it hilarious how SERIOUSLY people take the troll postings and how defensive they get. It's all so melodramatic.

Carl Mar 1st, 2002 09:27 AM

Psychologically speaking, Gee, you wouldn't bother to post if you didn't care, or you hadn't been upset by trollers in the past. Something at this site has bitten you in the past or you wouldn't be posting....a rather melodramatic undertone to your message in some ways. Look in the mirror.<BR><BR>

Frankly Mar 1st, 2002 09:28 AM

Gee-Have to agree with you especially the part about taking anything here seriously. I have found from expereince that restaurants recommended here usually don't come close to being as wonderful as everyone says...

Karen Mar 1st, 2002 11:43 AM

Carl is right... Gee and Frankly have obviously been burned here before or they would've followed their own advice and left. According to them it's oh so horrible here, and yet they're still here! LOL

Gee, you really Mar 1st, 2002 11:57 AM

Oh, Carl, Karen, you really GOT me. Why am I here if it's so crazy and mean?<BR><BR>I guess for the same reason I wrote in my posting, you dumba**es: I LIKE to come here because the melodrama is funny.

Lou Grant Mar 1st, 2002 12:06 PM

No such thing as a stupid question? O.K., then, answer me this:<BR><BR>Who's buried in Grant's Tomb?

canwa Mar 1st, 2002 12:17 PM

I have no problem with any question, as long as you can't answer it USING THE SITE THAT YOU ARE CURRENTLY ON.<BR><BR>

canwa Mar 1st, 2002 12:18 PM

Where can I find a site that offers travel information on the best hotels in XYZ? Also, where can I discuss travel issues in a forum like setting?<BR><BR>C'mon people. Use your noggin and look at the very site you are on.

vic's sister Mar 1st, 2002 12:31 PM

I whole heartedly agree with NOT using your real email address. A co-worker of mine was cyber stalked after posting on the fodor's site. This person found out her name, her husband's name, what she did for a living, where she lived etc. I don't mind being poked fun of, but the viciousness really is uncalled for . "Why can't we all just get along?"

xx Mar 1st, 2002 01:05 PM

Vics Sister-How did someone find out all that info from an email address?? Sounds to me like your "friend" posted personal information he should not have on this board such as employer, city etc. I agree cyberstalking is bad, but anyone idiotic enough to post personal info here or on any other board kinda asks for it...

xxx Mar 1st, 2002 01:32 PM

As anyone who has frequented this site can tell you, there are plenty of stupid people here and buttloads of stoooooopid questions! Long live the retards here, they make us laugh.

canwa Mar 1st, 2002 03:03 PM

Hey Carl (jung man)<BR><BR>Why don't you re-read GEE's message? I think you misinterpretted he/she like a big ol looza.

Susan Mar 1st, 2002 03:06 PM

Um, xxx, no one "asks for it" when they are cyber-stalked. That's why it's illegal. You probably think women who are raped ask for it too. Catch a clue.

just Mar 1st, 2002 03:18 PM

How much is a buttload?

vic's sister Mar 1st, 2002 03:29 PM

She gave out a web site ...and on the website was her phone number. From there, anyone can do a "reverse look up". How he found out what her husband's name was (probably did county assessment search). He went through alot of trouble finding all this information out..and it scared the heck out of her. Plus I'm told when you sign up for email accounts, some are accessible to the public. Who knows? Maybe this guy is a detective on the side or has that soft ware" looking for your high school classmate?". ]<BR><BR>SO you are right..she DID give out too much information..but this creep took the time to find out more.
