If one excludes the beauty/romance of the surrounding area and rates the sunset itself, I'm told that Oswego NY is ranked as among the world's best. There was (supposedly) an article in National Geographic many years ago that rated/ranked sunsets and had both Oswego NY and Hong Kong high on the list. I can think of no other compelling reason to visit Oswego buyt suspect that its location at the eastern end of Lake Ontario is a factor in this phenomenon.

Washington DC/ on top of the Hotel Washington. Very scenic too.

1. It's not nice to be a homer, but many (summer) evenings here in Seattle are grand when the sun sets behind the Olympic mountains across Puget Sound from the city, illuminating Mt. Rainier to the south and the sides of the tall buildings as it goes, with the cross-sound ferries lit up and gliding across the bay.

2. Greatest all-time sunset us was in Portugal - ripples of red and purple and orange, made me think of an old New Yorker cartoon with the monks standing on the balcony of the monastery applauding and yelling "Author, Author!" at the sunset.

3. Close behind was a mid-Pacific sunset seen from a freighter about 500 miles south of Hawaii. Hard to get back there, though.

Best sunset: Christmas Day 2000 on the beach at Asilomar on the Monterey Peninsula. Great waves to boot.

I agree with Diane.

I've seen some pretty good ones in Paris, Hawaii, and SEA but the best have been out the back door of my shop, on an ordinary day, at the most ordinary time.

These are the most spectacular to me because they are so unexpected.

Lynn

:-)

In Luxor, Egypt, at the Jolie Ville Hotel, sunset each day is a celebration. A full orchestra plays Bach while guests sit in silent awe as the sun slowly sinks on the western bank of the Nile River. Never have I experienced a more breathtaking sunset.

Posting on another thread re:Maine reminded me of one magic sunset over Pemaquid Point, with lushly luminous pinks and lavenders and even greenish tints over the whole sky -- just as the full moon rose over the reflecting sea into those pastels. Breathtaking.
