The best sunset

Can you tell me about those places where you experienced the best sunsets? What time of the year? I would like to find out also about places in Europe, Africa, and Central America. Should I re-post this question on those forums? I'm almost new to this forum. Thanks

Sunset at the Grand Canyon in late September. Absolutely breathtaking.

Mona Dec 13th, 2000 03:23 AM

Thank you for all those specific places you listed. This is exactly what I had in mind. My husband and I travel often and we found that even if a weather is not the best, hotel only OK, and food so so but when we can relax in the end of the day by sitting (or standing) silently watching sunset it makes a big difference. Everything starts to look much better and we are ready to plan our next trip. So here we are thinking where should we go next year and year after that. I agree that the sunset at the Grand Canyon (North Rim in late May) was the most spectacular. But nothing wrong also with the one in Kenya in Lewa Downs Camp in Late June, over Lake Champlain from Shelburne Museum in Burlington, VT in July, Montana's Many Glacier Lodge last July, and Paris' Eiffel Tower. Kal, we are going to Rome in March so I will check St. Peter's Bascilica and the Spanish Steps. Thank you and please keep them coming.

Mona, I think you hit it right on the head when you said that no matter what your day was like, watching the sun set at the end of it is a wonderful relaxation. I think taking the time to watch ANY sunset can inspire you.

For that reason, I'll say that watching the sun set from our Lake Huron property with the Mackinac Bridge visible just in front of the spectacular colors can't be beat. Take the time to enjoy where you are right now.

It is charming how people get all excited about sunsets in the Caribbean. We've seen some beauties from Negril Beach. However it always seems that within days of our return to Maryland, we'll catch an extraordinary one just at the "end of our street." When the clouds are just right and the sky turns orange, red, pink and purple, and clouds glow that incredible golden just before they turn blue....I have to stay the best we've seen have been at home!

Amita Dec 13th, 2000 06:36 AM

My boyfriend and I were driving through Death Valley in September and we stumbled upon people gathering at Zabriskie Point to watch the sun set. It was gorgeous, and the surreal setting made it interesting.

Cape Cod also has some fantastic sunsets...really, any place where the sun sets over water is going to be good. :)

XX Dec 13th, 2000 12:48 PM

Two places

Brennickes Beach in Poipu, Kauai. Locals gather on the rocks, drink rum punch and watch th most beautiful sunset on the planet

Mallory Square in Key West. Totally overdone now, but you have to experience the scene once. Plus, the sunset is good as well.

Although I have been to far more exotic places with great sunsets, the one most spectacular that I remember was in Michigan. Looking out to the west from
a small town near the Silver Lake sand dune area you can see a "lagoon" that is an inlet/ bay in the foreground with lake (Michigan) and sand dune meeting in semi-circles at the sides. It started as a brilliant red ball sinking into this semi-circle of blue and white with shadows of a lone canoer at quite a distance in the foreground. It then became fragmented with reflections of itself in the water as it "sizzled" into that water and over the horizon. I have seen some breath taking ones over the prairie also- but that particular Michigan summer night one really stays with me.

At the end of the pier in Clearwater Beach, Florida!

Samantha Dec 13th, 2000 06:07 PM

Nice question, Mona. Lori, I used to live in Cheboygan, MI and have seen my fair share of gorgeous sunsets in that area, a few while enjoying the drive while coming up on the Mackinac Bridge. Other sunsets I've particularly enjoyed were in the Carmel/Monterey/Big Sur, CA area, and the Gulf side beaches of FL. The most spectacular one ever, though, was in Trinidad, CA, at the top of the lookout - just the right mixture of clouds, the waves crashing, rocks jutting out of the water, etc. It was absolutely breathtaking and one of the many times I could kick myself in the behind for not having my camera with me. :-(

lisa Dec 14th, 2000 11:25 AM

I'm surprised and pleased that so many people have mentioned sunsets in Michigan. I have very fond memories of sunsets all along Lake Michigan, from Holland all the way up to Traverse Bay, Petoskey, etc.

The best sunsets I have ever seen were in Costa Rica at a wonderful hotel called Villa Caletas. We were there in November.
Mona Dec 14th, 2000 08:43 PM

Thank you again. I never had a desire to visit Michigan but I feel diiferently after reading some of your statments. Anyway, we are leaving tomorrow for Sicily so who knows maybe Taormina has those amazing sunsets too.

Rick Dec 21st, 2000 09:55 AM

I thought sunsets in Vancouver, BC were among the most beautiful and powerful I had ever seen... this was in June.

Lela Dec 24th, 2000 04:37 PM

Best Sunsets?

Naples, Florida
Key West, Florida
And on any Greek Island!

Blair Schlecter Dec 24th, 2000 05:14 PM

I live in Los Angeles and have seen many stunning sunsets here. We have less trees or mountains to block views. The best time for them is summer when the sky often turns orange, red, and purple.

Al Dec 25th, 2000 05:09 AM

I am told that dust particles in the air here in Arizona cause our sunsets to be so colorful. Copper, mauve, cream, purple, irridescent blue. Reflected light on high clouds long after the sun has set. Awesome. God's color palette.

ginger Dec 25th, 2000 06:28 PM

south louisiana in the fall. the sugarcane is burning and the sunsets are about fifteen different colors.

San Marino, Italy, on all of those mountains overlooking valley villages. Bellisssississimo!

geocities.com/j_goyette/t.html

If one excludes the beauty/romance of the surrounding area and rates the sunset itself, I'm told that Oswego NY is ranked as among the world's best. There was (supposedly) an article in National Geographic many years ago that rated/ranked sunsets and had both Oswego NY and Hong Kong high on the list. I can think of no other compelling reason to visit Oswego buyt suspect that its location at the eastern end of Lake Ontario is a factor in this phenomenon.

les Dec 27th, 2000 08:46 AM

Washington DC/ on top of the Hotel Washington. Very scenic too.

John Dec 27th, 2000 09:38 AM

1. It's not nice to be a homer, but many (summer) evenings here in Seattle are grand when the sun sets behind the Olympic mountains across Puget Sound from the city, illuminating Mt. Rainier to the south and the sides of the tall buildings as it goes, with the cross-sound ferries lit up and gliding across the bay.

2. Greatest all-time sunset us was in Portugal - ripples of red and purple and orange, made me think of an old New Yorker cartoon with the monks standing on the balcony of the monastery applauding and yelling "Author, Author!" at the sunset.

3. Close behind was a mid-Pacific sunset seen from a freighter about 500 miles south of Hawaii. Hard to get back there, though.

wis Dec 27th, 2000 12:49 PM

Alaska. Bar none.

Bob Dec 27th, 2000 03:44 PM

Best sunset: Christmas Day 2000 on the beach at Asilomar on the Monterey Peninsula. Great waves to boot.

lynn Dec 28th, 2000 06:15 PM

I agree with Diane.

I've seen some pretty good ones in Paris, Hawaii, and SEA but the best have been out the back door of my shop, on an ordinary day, at the most ordinary time.

These are the most spectacular to me because they are so unexpected.

Lynn

:-)

Cape Town, South Africa

In Luxor, Egypt, at the Jolie Ville Hotel, sunset each day is a celebration. A full orchestra plays Bach while guests sit in silent awe as the sun slowly sinks on the western bank of the Nile River. Never have I experienced a more breathtaking sunset.

Cass Dec 29th, 2000 10:08 AM

Posting on another thread re:Maine reminded me of one magic sunset over Pemaquid Point, with lushly luminous pinks and lavenders and even greenish tints over the whole sky -- just as the full moon rose over the reflecting sea into those pastels. Breathtaking.
