I was at lunch today with a couple of my gal pals and we were discussing some places in Philly that had really good sandwiches.

Where can you find some of the best samiches in Manhattan.

I had one of the best foie gras sandwiches of my life at D'Artagnan, which is now closed.

Potted meat on white bread. Yummy!

I have no idea what potted meat is.

Only Republicans eat white bread.

Has anyone ever had a samich from 'witchcraft?

Incredible sandwiches in NYC are a dime a dozen.

Cafecito, Havana Central or Havana Village for amazing cubanos.

Rue B for excellent Panini.

Tiny's for vegetarian.

'Wichcraft for delicious "designer" sandwiches.

Milano Gourmet for Italian varieties.

But, in truth, you can get superior sandwiches at just about any corner deli in Manhattan (e.g., Lenny's). The competition for good food is intense, so it's almost always better than you'll find anywhere else.

Potted meat is a gelatinous canned product made mostly of chicken lips.

Spread on bread it’s the American equivalent of a vegemite sammich.

Don’t think dems or republicans are partial to white bread unless it’s Mark Foley whose bread is now toast with his spam in a can.

Speaking of which….made me think of Leno the other night where it was quipped that democrats mark their books with a bookmarker, while republicans just turn over a Paige.

I've eaten a lot of sandwiches in New York, but my favorite is the Blue Reuben at Blue Ribbon Bakery.

It is delish!

White Bread and BBQ are intertwined. It's not a party thing. You've got to have a sauce holder.

Sandwich Planet for tons and tons o' options (9th Ave and 41st St). And its sister restaurant Island Burgers & Shakes for the same with burger or grilled chicken (further up 9th Ave)...

But Gekko's right: just about anywhere!

Sandwich Planet sounds good....I think a sandwich would be a great quick and affordable lunch for a person on the go. :)

But don't go out of your way .. if one is "on the go" in Manhattan, a great sandwich can be found just about anywhere.

I am going to get a sandwich at peanut butter and co. and yes, I think I may be daring and try one of those fluffer nutter things....I never had one, and it seems interesting...although they do have a peanut butter and bacon sandwich that sounds de-vine! ha!!

Well, when I have heard the term potted meat, it meant to me anything from spam to liverwerst (the little cans with the little red devil on them) and even corned beef in a can (talk about salty!).

Although I dislike spam with a passion, I will say that a fried corned beef from a can sandwich with mustard is very good.

One of the worst sandwiches I ever had I remember so vividly because it tasted like a bad homemade sandwich..they used cheap roll bread, some meat (not much), and they used iceberg lettuce (!!!) and they gave me a part of the touch part of the lettuce....grrrrrrrr

Potted meat is a type of canned "meat" used for sandwiches, but no, it is not the same as spam or other canned meat.

I agree. GREAT sandwiches in almost every deli/grocery/market I've tried in Manhattan - not Carnegie type deli. My comfort food = egg salad sandwich on white bread.

I absolutely LOVE witchcraft! They have terrific sandwiches (for lunch AND breakfast!)

it's a toss up for me..either a corned beef and pastrami on rye from the now closed Second Avenue Deli OR The lobster Roll at Pearl on Cornelia. Those were the two best sandwiches I had in NYC.

Potted meat is different from spam. Spam has its own place, like somewhere deep in the garage saved for a nuclear disaster or similar. Mainly because it has a half-life of, well it will outlast most of us. :)

I recall seeing on TV that folks in Spam-land actually hold Spam Festivals.

Spam in a can helped feed our troops during WWII, and is perhaps one reason it has become more popular to later generations. I faintly recall a few times eating it fried, with something or another just like I recall cod liver oil.

Canned meats per se, are different from potted meats that get spread on bread.

Now chicken lips, served with Chianti and fava beans!

Best sandwich I've had in Manhattan was at Le Pain Quotidien - open face - grilled chicken and mozzarella cheese from what I remember. Looked tiny but was very satisfying - yum!

I have never tried a lobster roll, and while I think lobster is ok, I don't think I would ever shell out the big bucks for one. Are the lobster rolls, themselves, worth a trip to that restaurant?
