Polemic Thread: Best Samich in Manhattan

I was at lunch today with a couple of my gal pals and we were discussing some places in Philly that had really good sandwiches.

Where can you find some of the best samiches in Manhattan.

I had one of the best foie gras sandwiches of my life at D'Artagnan, which is now closed.

starrsville Oct 9th, 2006 10:30 AM

Potted meat on white bread. Yummy!

marginal_margiela Oct 9th, 2006 11:30 AM

I have no idea what potted meat is.

Only Republicans eat white bread.

Has anyone ever had a samich from 'witchcraft?

starrsville Oct 9th, 2006 11:39 AM

Bless your heart! So, so mistaken.
Bill Clinton would strongly disagree with that (grossly incorrect) statement.

Gekko Oct 9th, 2006 11:48 AM

Incredible sandwiches in NYC are a dime a dozen.

Cafecito, Havana Central or Havana Village for amazing cubanos.

Rue B for excellent Panini.

Tiny's for vegetarian.

'Wichcraft for delicious "designer" sandwiches.

Milano Gourmet for Italian varieties.

But, in truth, you can get superior sandwiches at just about any corner deli in Manhattan (e.g., Lenny's). The competition for good food is intense, so it's almost always better than you'll find anywhere else.

Potted meat is a gelatinous canned product made mostly of chicken lips.

Spread on bread it’s the American equivalent of a vegemite sammich.

Don’t think dems or republicans are partial to white bread unless it’s Mark Foley whose bread is now toast with his spam in a can.

Speaking of which….made me think of Leno the other night where it was quipped that democrats mark their books with a bookmarker, while republicans just turn over a Paige.

Sorry about that…. :^o

Who stole my sammich??

I've eaten a lot of sandwiches in New York, but my favorite is the Blue Reuben at Blue Ribbon Bakery.

It is delish!

bbqboy Oct 9th, 2006 01:46 PM

White Bread and BBQ are intertwined. It's not a party thing. You've got to have a sauce holder.

Sandwich Planet for tons and tons o' options (9th Ave and 41st St). And its sister restaurant Island Burgers & Shakes for the same with burger or grilled chicken (further up 9th Ave)...

But Gekko's right: just about anywhere!
:D

ilovetotravel29 Oct 9th, 2006 03:02 PM

Sandwich Planet sounds good....I think a sandwich would be a great quick and affordable lunch for a person on the go. :)

Gekko Oct 9th, 2006 03:05 PM

But don't go out of your way .. if one is "on the go" in Manhattan, a great sandwich can be found just about anywhere.

ilovetotravel29 Oct 9th, 2006 03:07 PM

I am going to get a sandwich at peanut butter and co. and yes, I think I may be daring and try one of those fluffer nutter things....I never had one, and it seems interesting...although they do have a peanut butter and bacon sandwich that sounds de-vine! ha!!

and yeah, i can have exquisite and "mature" tastes as well.....

Elvis' last words?

ilovetotravel29 Oct 9th, 2006 06:06 PM

Well, when I have heard the term potted meat, it meant to me anything from spam to liverwerst (the little cans with the little red devil on them) and even corned beef in a can (talk about salty!).

Although I dislike spam with a passion, I will say that a fried corned beef from a can sandwich with mustard is very good.

One of the worst sandwiches I ever had I remember so vividly because it tasted like a bad homemade sandwich..they used cheap roll bread, some meat (not much), and they used iceberg lettuce (!!!) and they gave me a part of the touch part of the lettuce....grrrrrrrr

starrsville Oct 9th, 2006 09:04 PM

Potted meat is a type of canned "meat" used for sandwiches, but no, it is not the same as spam or other canned meat.

Elvis' favorite was FRIED peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Well, more like sauted in butter.

I agree. GREAT sandwiches in almost every deli/grocery/market I've tried in Manhattan - not Carnegie type deli. My comfort food = egg salad sandwich on white bread.

lmoneylsauce Oct 9th, 2006 09:06 PM

I absolutely LOVE witchcraft! They have terrific sandwiches (for lunch AND breakfast!)

PamSF Oct 9th, 2006 11:21 PM

it's a toss up for me..either a corned beef and pastrami on rye from the now closed Second Avenue Deli OR The lobster Roll at Pearl on Cornelia. Those were the two best sandwiches I had in NYC.

bear900 Oct 10th, 2006 07:47 AM

I was being ridiculous in my previous post (not that I've ever been before) :)

I have to say, I have tried vegemite and spewed for the rest of the day!

Potted meat is different from spam. Spam has its own place, like somewhere deep in the garage saved for a nuclear disaster or similar. Mainly because it has a half-life of, well it will outlast most of us. :)

I recall seeing on TV that folks in Spam-land actually hold Spam Festivals.

Spam in a can helped feed our troops during WWII, and is perhaps one reason it has become more popular to later generations. I faintly recall a few times eating it fried, with something or another just like I recall cod liver oil.

Canned meats per se, are different from potted meats that get spread on bread.

Now chicken lips, served with Chianti and fava beans!

janette Oct 10th, 2006 07:56 AM

Best sandwich I've had in Manhattan was at Le Pain Quotidien - open face - grilled chicken and mozzarella cheese from what I remember. Looked tiny but was very satisfying - yum!

ilovetotravel29 Oct 10th, 2006 08:24 AM

I have never tried a lobster roll, and while I think lobster is ok, I don't think I would ever shell out the big bucks for one. Are the lobster rolls, themselves, worth a trip to that restaurant?

Suerich68 Oct 10th, 2006 08:33 AM

When did the Carnegie Deli close? I love their sandwiches.

Is the term "samich" some low-class pronunciation of sandwich? I don't believe I've ever heard that.

Gekko Oct 10th, 2006 08:59 AM

The new restaurant Ditch Plains, owned by a couple of Australians, features an incredible lobster roll that is worth a visit. It's on Bedford Street in the Village.

lizziea06 Oct 10th, 2006 09:45 AM

I thought the lobster roll at Pearl was way better than Ditch Plains...and I hated the chips that came with it. And Lenny's is not just any corner deli...it's WAY better than most corner delis. That's my two cents:-)

There is a fantastic place on Sullivan b/t Spring and Prince called Alidoro. It's a tiny Italian deli with one table in it. The best meat, cheese, and bread, and the sandwiches are enormous. They aren't cheap, but they easily make two meals.

Suerich68 Oct 10th, 2006 10:24 AM

Has this thread been edited? One of the posters stated that the Carnegie Deli is closed - and that post is now gone.

marginal_margiela Oct 10th, 2006 10:42 AM

When I was a wee lad, I couldn't pronounce sandwich, so I said "samich." I have noticed that a lot of little kids pronounce it the same way.

I am going to be around Prince St. tomorrow. Maybe I will have a samich at Alidoro.

GoTravel Oct 10th, 2006 11:52 AM

Sue, PamSF said the now closed Second Avenue Deli not Carnegie.

BTW, I agree with Pam.

Gekko Oct 10th, 2006 04:28 PM

Mistake ... Carnegie is open, 2nd Ave Deli is now closed.

Ryan Oct 10th, 2006 04:56 PM

I was going to answer your question by telling you to go to Manganaro's Hero Boy on 9th and 38th (for the best chicken cutlet sandwich in the city), but then I realized a guy who still calls it a "samich" is probably ok with just your everyday PB&J.
