Plane emergency landing

There is a plane just about to make an emergency landing in LA. On CNN right now.

It's front landing wheels are pointed sideways.

On CNN right now almost ready to land.

P_M Sep 21st, 2005 04:31 PM

Oh dear God, this strikes a major nerve with me. Circumstances were different, but I do have some idea of what those passengers are going through. My TV is now on, I am hoping and praying for the best. Thanks for the heads up.

seeksocean Sep 21st, 2005 04:32 PM

I have no TV, what happened? CNN on line is not current. Thanks!

P_M Sep 21st, 2005 04:33 PM

I just started watching, but it looks like the plane is still in the air. I'll post back when they land.

Look at MSNBC.

seetheworld Sep 21st, 2005 04:35 PM

Nose gear is bent (twisted) and the pilot noticed it shortly after takeoff LA to JFK.

P_M Sep 21st, 2005 04:35 PM

OK, they are flying around over the ocean in order to burn as much fuel as possible before landing. As mentioned above, the wheels are at a 90 degree angle, exactly sideways. They will land in about 10 minutes.

paula1470 Sep 21st, 2005 04:37 PM

It's a Jet Blue flight that left Burbank Airport a while ago and realized that it's landing gear wasn't working. They are trying to land at LAX. Haven't landed yet.

Cali Sep 21st, 2005 04:38 PM

In LA they are saying it will not land for at least another 60 minutes - but before dark.

paula1470 Sep 21st, 2005 04:40 PM

My TV station here in San Diego is talking to a AA pilot-he says the danger of this landing on a scale of 1-10 is about a 1 or 2. I sure hope he's right. I am definitely saying prayers for all those people.

Cali Sep 21st, 2005 04:45 PM

TV in LA now says it will land within the next 16 minutes - by 6 PM Scary.

Scarlett Sep 21st, 2005 04:47 PM

They are coming in now for a landing. at LAX.
God bless them!

seeksocean Sep 21st, 2005 04:52 PM

Please let me know what happens as I can't seem to get the MSNBC video on my computer and I have no TV and little radio reception. God Bless!

OneWanderingJew Sep 21st, 2005 04:52 PM

I don't know whether to watch or turn the channel.

I have CNN on right now and they have a split screen w/one shot of the plane and the other showing all the emer. equipment on the runway.

sunnydelite Sep 21st, 2005 04:54 PM

My husband is a supervisor for an airline and said definitely only a 1-2 on a scale also of 10........
they should be fine....

sunnydelite Sep 21st, 2005 04:56 PM

As soon as they land the tires will probably blow out my hub said..but they should definitely be fine....

OneWanderingJew Sep 21st, 2005 04:57 PM

SunnyD--I hope your husband is right. I can't imagine what those passengers are going through right now...I especially worry about any babies onboard who are not strapped in carseats.

P_M Sep 21st, 2005 04:57 PM

seeksocean, I was about to go to the store before I saw this thread. I am now glued to the TV so I will get back with you immediately.

A word of encouragement--help is standing by, and that makes a huge difference. In my situation it was a fire that caused our emergency landing. I was so thankful that the firefighters were right there on the runway to put out the fire when we landed and to catch us when we came down the slides. It really does make a difference. Let's send out our positive Fodor's vibes to LA.

sunnydelite Sep 21st, 2005 04:58 PM

As a mom of twins wander, I hear you..........
Very scary,we travel alot but always still get nervous flying.....

seeksocean Sep 21st, 2005 04:59 PM

Since this is the only means of knowing what's going on, how long until attempted landing?

seetheworld Sep 21st, 2005 05:00 PM

very, very soon.

seetheworld Sep 21st, 2005 05:01 PM

140 passengers on board, 6 crew.

seeksocean Sep 21st, 2005 05:02 PM

Keep this girl in the boonies posted please! I fly a lot and have lots of near misses on planes....more than I should have.

seetheworld Sep 21st, 2005 05:02 PM

OWJ, I'm with you...not sure I want to watch.

iceeu2 Sep 21st, 2005 05:03 PM

I'm with you OWJ. My heart is in my throat and I'm not sure I want to watch either.

sunnydelite Sep 21st, 2005 05:06 PM

theyll be ok guys..Keep the faith...
scary thing to have to go through..they have to wait to burn most of the fuel....so who knows how long it will take..They have to carry enough fuel to fly plus an extra hr. of fuel supposedly..if they hit bad weather or soemthing...like that...just rambling here........

Scarlett Sep 21st, 2005 05:10 PM

They say they Are foaming the runway, they want to keep the sparks down, landing at about 95 mph..the nose gear will collapse and that is when the sparks will fly .. they say it will be rough but they have done these before..from his mouth to Gods ears!

P_M Sep 21st, 2005 05:10 PM

I'm having a tough time with this too, yet I cannot tear myself away.

At least this plane has the opportunity to burn off their fuel, and that is good. When my plane was on fire, there was no time to dump or burn fuel, we had to land with a full load which is not a safe thing to do, but we still made it. This plane will be almost on empty when they land and that will help. sunnydelite is right, keep the faith.

seeksocean Sep 21st, 2005 05:14 PM

I don't know whether I am glad for limited access to media or not. All I have are you guys to let me know what's up. Thank you!

gyppielou Sep 21st, 2005 05:14 PM

believe..........

seetheworld Sep 21st, 2005 05:15 PM

Well, they haven't shut down operations at the airport yet, so they may still be burning fuel (this plane cannot dump fuel). They've been in the air for 3 hours, burning approx. 6,000 gallons of fuel an hour.

OldSouthernBelle Sep 21st, 2005 05:18 PM

I'm looking at it right now, and the wheels look down to me??

paula1470 Sep 21st, 2005 05:18 PM

paula1470 Sep 21st, 2005 05:20 PM
